I've been trying to decide how to share my experiences from the last 4 days. Here goes.
I'll start at the beginning, with a bit of backgorund. As you can see by my location I live very near Manhattan, and right now I am working at a location less than 1 mile from the S. I. Ferry. The twin towers were always a majestic sight from many parts of the borough.
When the first plane hit I was sitting in our office doing paperwork with the radio on. The first report came as a twin engine plane that just hit one of the twin towers, it kinda didn't register at first so I kept writing. Soon after that the music stopped and they broke through and said the other tower was hit. I jumped into our shop rig (a 2000 chev K2500 6. 5
) and flew up the hill a couple blocks, it's very hilly in this part of the Island. I saw them smoking like 2 smoke stacks and the streets were filling up with people looking at a sight they will never see again. I had to go back because I knew I had to be back. Two more guys jump in the rig and go to Richmond terrace, which is where the ferry is and they had a front row seat to see the first tower come down, by this time we had a TV set up and were watching this on TV as well as well as seeing it live. A few minutes later we heard a huge sound of crashing steel, like the Sanitation men messing with the snowplows, but 100 times as loud. I'm convinced that this was the sound of the second tower falling!
The remainder of the day was spent getting equipment ready to go over there to use as roadblocks and to start hauling debris.
The next 2 days were spent working and watching press coverage and trying to make sense of what has happened, and seeing that the towers are really gone! I see equipment and Men with the unmistakable white mud from that scene. The Men have stories that you won't read in any newspaper. The smoke that the scene in making is unbelievable, making it very hard for Brooklyn to breathe.
Today I am off because I had to take my Wife for a test (She is OK
) But I am still glued to the TV. I know the President is coming to the area, and sure enough I hear the roar of a fighter jet and the very loud thump of Marine 1 and it's entorouge. We see the coverage on TV, and later while listining to the newsradio they announced that He was boarding to leave, so I went outside and sat on my stoop. Sure enough, 10 mins later I heard the same noise but this time I saw and I saluted. UNBELIVEABLE!
