Ok, here's the post that all you guys with silencer ring questions have been waiting for. I just removed mine a couple of hours ago and am now going to dispell some of the rumors that are floating around these boards.

First of all, it is a turbo mod that is worth the time no matter what air filter/turbo setup you have. It will take no more than 10 minutes being extra careful and if you have the right tools, you could probably complete the whole job in less than 5 minutes. Anyone could do this, even if you know nothing about a diesel engine whatsoever.

After reading all of the posts on the boards about the turbo "screaming like a banshee" and "wow that turbo whines" I'll have to admit I was pretty excited about getting this thing out of there. Turbo whistle is probably one of my favorite parts of my truck and I'm always looking for something to make it louder. I took it out for my initial test drive and honestly wasn't that impressed. You still can't hear the turbo in first gear and it is only audible during the later part of second gear. Third gear is without a doubt the loudest for some reason, it really blows loud - this was the only part that got me excited. Fourth and fifth gears are also sound louder, but it's a different kind of sound than we're used to.

I think this would benefit people with a completely stock motor more than anyone. I already installed a K&N air filter so I really couldn't tell a whole lot of difference, at least not what I thought I would after all the talk on the site. But don't get me wrong, it's worth the time even if you do have a high-flow air filter. It definitely doesn't hurt anything. I'm just trying to point out the fact that it doesn't make as much of a difference as some of these guys on here would lead you to believe.

The sound is changed from more of the high-pitched whistle, to more of a grainy, big-rig, twin turbocharger sound. It does sound pretty good, and you can also hear the turbo winding down after the ring is removed too. That's a pretty cool sound.

I don't think anyone would be unhappy with the sound, just don't expect it to blow your eardrums out.

I'll still be looking for something to make mine louder, I'm not satisfied yet.

Is your K&N Air filter an open type like the AFE set-ups are ? Or is it in the factory air cleaner assy? An open type filter will increase the sound of the turbo also. Sounds as if you got the factory set up still there and its not breathing the way it should. What set-up do you have?

Big Honkin Air Filter

Get you one of these and it'll scream with the silencer out. Po Mans Mega Cannon!

BHAF Part #'s:

NAPA filter # 2790

WIX # 42790

Baldwin # PA2820

HOLY TOLEDO!!!! :--) Now I see why you call it a BHAF! Now I wish I hadn't bought my K&N and would have done that. Geez now I've got another item to add to my list. :p

:D Yep, hooks right up with no problem. You don't even have to remove the silencer ring to hear the turbo with one of these BHAF's on. Hands down it will out perform the K&N and since you can get it from fleetguard, you don't have to worry about warranty problems. :D :D :D

Going to car q tomorrow to pick one up

You probably cant get one from car quest since its a heavy duty filter application... unless they can cross reference and order for ya. I had my fleetguard on there for a while until finally I decided it had to come off. Everytime I sprayed off at the carwash water would end up around the filter element. Especially if you open the hood afterwards. I tried using a trash bag over it but found that inconvenient... . and once I forgot to remove it and couldn't figure why my truck felt so sluggish. I guess I was always afraid a heavy rain while driving would somehow get water on the paper too and destroy the filter and suck paper into the turbo.

Now that may well have been my own unfounded fears of using this filter but I cant help thinking the way I do. So I took a stock box... cut the side opening out to 4"x9" using a red hot thin blade knife and installed an AFE drop in replacement. I must say that I really think this is louder than the BHAF even at idle. It sure sounds louder under load. I also removed the "boot" between the filter and fender. Plus no water can get to it.

Not trying to rain on a BHAF parade cause I think they are cool too. I just needed something different personally.

Fleetguard # AH19037

How much is That BHAF? I did not like the light dust film the the hose from the K&N drop in, so I went back to stock for now. Any problems with heat and how long till it needs replaced?

I just took my ring out to- not much difference- YET

Cost of the BHAF depends mostly where you can get it. Even NAPA stores have them at different prices than others (that's where I got mine). I heard anywhere from $30-60.

Fleetguard AH19037

Baldwin PA-2806 (metal housing)

I got mine from local Napa, it was $35. They always have to order it. It'll last you about a year just open. To make it last alot longer you can get one of these. Prefilters make it look sweet. Socks are water repellent, it literally beads water, but whats so weird is you can see through it like a pair of pantyhose. Very minimal air restriction. Used in Racing Applications. They work well. Soap and water wash after dirty. I usually just wipe mine off with a damp cloth. Mine's been on for 6+ months and filter does not show speck of dirt!

Thanks for the Pic Tracy!

Outerwears prefilter (sock) $33

1-800-967-3450

12611 US 131

Schoolcraft, MI 49087

Part#: WR3325-105

WR3325-105RD

WR = water resistan (this is an option)

Next 7 digits are the part number for that size filter

Last two letters (RD) are the color, I ordered Red.

Does it just lay there, or does it have a support?

It just lays there. It won't move. Take the nuts of the factory box that held it down and put it on the studs to prevent chaffing or hole puncture. You'll love it and everybody who looks under your hood will like it too!

Hi all, Anyone concerned about that thing sucking in alot of heated air without a baracade tween it and the turbo?

Cheers, Steve J.

Stranger, I am not sure about the Fiter Minder. I have never seen anybody with one. I am sure you could. As this filter is WAY over kill for this size engine, I do not think it is needed. You can tell when it gets dirty. Get ya a sock for it too. It'll last a long time.

As far as sucking in hot air. This has been hashed out many times here. While sitting idling it might, some. Cruising at about any speed many have checked and the underhood temp is within about 10 degrees of the outside temp. Many people have made mounts/Heat shields for them (the filters). Is the benefit worth the time or money... ???

I always liked this shield. Instead of blocking the filter from heat, block the heat from the filter.

The real truth behind removing the silencer ring. I took mine out for about 3 months. I ended up putting it back in. I too like the whistle it makes, but it drove me nuts when pulling trailers. You won't hear it in 1st and 2nd gear unless you are building boost, which typically isn't going to happen unless you are really on it or pulling something heavy. When we pulled our horse trailer, it was loud enough that we had to turn up the stereo to here it and my wife who was sitting shotgun (where it is even louder) complained quite a bit about it. I too have a KN in the stock box, but it's always been there and I'm not sure if it's any louder than stock.

Heres the one that SUCKS...CooOOOooOL Air

Of course I am partial to this... dual inlets, most efficient at reducing EGT's over any other and it does not need the filter minder... it flows so much air that the factory minder is very inaccurate anyway.

Plus, you'll hear your turbo. There are a few folks that do not like the sound... thousands do!

Its nice to have alternative products out there. ;)

This is enclosed and it can be used with just the fender inlet or both the cowl and fender. :)
