Ok, here's the post that all you guys with silencer ring questions have been waiting for. I just removed mine a couple of hours ago and am now going to dispell some of the rumors that are floating around these boards.
First of all, it is a turbo mod that is worth the time no matter what air filter/turbo setup you have. It will take no more than 10 minutes being extra careful and if you have the right tools, you could probably complete the whole job in less than 5 minutes. Anyone could do this, even if you know nothing about a diesel engine whatsoever.
After reading all of the posts on the boards about the turbo "screaming like a banshee" and "wow that turbo whines" I'll have to admit I was pretty excited about getting this thing out of there. Turbo whistle is probably one of my favorite parts of my truck and I'm always looking for something to make it louder. I took it out for my initial test drive and honestly wasn't that impressed. You still can't hear the turbo in first gear and it is only audible during the later part of second gear. Third gear is without a doubt the loudest for some reason, it really blows loud - this was the only part that got me excited. Fourth and fifth gears are also sound louder, but it's a different kind of sound than we're used to.
I think this would benefit people with a completely stock motor more than anyone. I already installed a K&N air filter so I really couldn't tell a whole lot of difference, at least not what I thought I would after all the talk on the site. But don't get me wrong, it's worth the time even if you do have a high-flow air filter. It definitely doesn't hurt anything. I'm just trying to point out the fact that it doesn't make as much of a difference as some of these guys on here would lead you to believe.
The sound is changed from more of the high-pitched whistle, to more of a grainy, big-rig, twin turbocharger sound. It does sound pretty good, and you can also hear the turbo winding down after the ring is removed too. That's a pretty cool sound.
I don't think anyone would be unhappy with the sound, just don't expect it to blow your eardrums out.
I'll still be looking for something to make mine louder, I'm not satisfied yet.
