2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission The rear drivshaft yoke has a "harmonic balancer" ring on it - any idea what it's for

The Yoke that goes into the transfer case has a weight on it - like a harmonic balancer would. It is approx 1. 5" wide, 7" diameter, and is attached to the front yoke via a rubber piece similar to the harmonic balancer.



Any idea why some trucks have this and some do not?



Any idea what it is for?



Has anyone have this move on them?

Well, it's seems pretty clear it's intended to eliminate/reduce vibration - which IS a problem for many 4x4 trucks - why some have it and others don't, dunno - maybe related to gear ratios?

It is a dampner used to reduce and/or cancel out the Noise Vibration and Harshness, NVH, issues with driveline.

I have that torsional dampener on my 2wd. It was the first warranty job I needed. It didn't look right when I got my truck and it came loose in the first year of ownership. I noticed it had failed while on a trip to Florida. It was quiet while driving, but sounded like a hammer hitting the shaft when shifting gears. I drove the 1200 miles home without incident and had it changed. The replacement is going strong for the last nine years.
