Tow with Wrangler

We are back!

as i was coming home today from penn, i couldnt help but notice all of the underpowered and overweight pull units that were heading towards bristol for the race, most if not all were what we call weekend warriors, no offense meant, because i will join your ranks in about ten years, but what exactly do these rv salesman tell you folks? to me the most dangerous part of towing is a truck that cant maintain hiway speed, and in alot of states that we travel you can be cited for not maintaining a min hiway speed. i was watching an rv show the other nite where a recording artist told of the salesman checking him out on all of the features of his rig, then left him to learn on his own how to drive it, back it, handle a tire failure, etc. to me that should be the first, mandatory, reqirement to get behind the wheel of a big , heavy, hard to handle combo... . just a rant... but if it were my family, i'd want more before a pulled on a busy interstate. :--)

Yeah and in a perfect world we would have no crime, we wouldn't have to lock our doors at night  . Sorry for the sarcasm but I couldn't help it. Taking a look at what is on the road on any given trip reveals a good number of overloaded rigs. The RV salesman will (Barry excluded of course;) ) tell you whatever he needs to to convince you to buy that big ol' rig. I've seen it way too many times. There is no education involved. Really scary. I think that ALL drivers of trailers should have to pass additional testing in order to legally drive a trailer.

Too mee what's worse is that a 70 year old retiree can go and buy a 45' bus complete with air brakes, 500hp diesel engine and weighing in at 25,000lbs- all with no special license. the biggest thing he's ever driven is a station wagon. Sad, but true.

Actually, my buddy's Monaco's road weight is 30k-lbs! No kidding. It's a 38ft Diplomat with the 8. 3 Cummins and the 6sp Allison. Air brakes and suppension. Then he flat towes a 4WD Dakota behind it! The whole rig has got to be 50ft long! It's beautiful!

But he's only 57 and plays on a soccer team with the under 40 guys who can't keep up with him. His motorhome before the Monaco was a 32ft Bounder which he had for 14 years! This guy is one of the rare exceptions that thinks motor head cause he is one! He actually was considering a brand new Porsche(sp?) GT2. Yep all 200k-$ of it! Must be nice. It wouldn't be his first Porsche either! He's a real nut! His Excursion is a 7. 3 Powerstroke. Man does that turn that monster into a real nice well, monster!

That Monaco of his easily cruises at 70mph. He keeps walking away from me. Nothing I can do. It's amazing. I'm 20,660, he's 30,000 and he walks away not even realizing how effortless it is for his rig. What a set up. Like I said, it's beautiful.

The rigs that really intimidate me on the road are those tongue trailers that are loaded too tounge-weight light. Their sway is unreal and they put up with it and tow! They'll speed up, the swaying will start and then they slowly slow down and regain a straight path and then speed up again and the whole thing starts over!!!! Man I hate passing those guys. One guy didn't have his car on his car trailer far enough fwd. Another didn't have his boat against his winch kisser wheel. The cable was hooked but his boat was about two feet from it! He was all over the place!!!!! AND they do it with under rated-under inflated tires!!!!!!!!!! How cluless can people get!?!?!?!? (errr, me being perfect in every way!!!) (except for spelling!!!!)

AND I never lie (except for that one) :D

RAMalama – I beg to differ from you that there is nothing you CAN do. Edge EZ immediately comes to mind. Probably not enough to keep up with you friend, but it would help. Lots of things you could do, but I can understand your not wanting to because of the warranty issues. Your buddy’s Cummins is half again bigger than yours is, but he’s pulling half again more weight too. The Cummins is an amazing engine isn’t it!

I know what you mean, I got a 1 ton 4x4, because sometimes I have to pickup 2 - 55# bags of dog food at the store and the 4x4 is great when it snows :-laf :-laf :-laf I didn't even need a salesman to help me figure this out. I figured it out reading the TDR ;)
