Guys,

'ol Blue is back on the road, but has the shakes. Gonna adjust the valves and retorque the head soon. Been out of town on business so he's been sittin and waitin on my return. Any hints as to why he's shakin. Again... only shakes at idle, and just off idle. Completely smooths out @1800-2000rpm's. I changed to a new head and new injectors, did not fool with anything else on the truck. He did not used to shake, so why start now. O. k. maybe it did used to shake a little, but no more than a diesel should. Now it is objectionable. kinda takes the smile off your face when sittin at a redlight. . knowaddamean???

BIG DON I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. I TOO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 1990 250 4X4. I HAVE 150,000 ON IT NOW AND FROM DAY ONE IT ALWAYS HAD A BAD SHAKE AT IDLE IN GEAR(AUTOMATIC)! I THOUGHT IT WAS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST UNTIL I BOUGHT A 1993 1 TON 4X4 DUALLY. WHAT A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO. NOW I CAN'T STAND TO SIT AT A LIGHT WITH THE 1990. I'VE POP TESTED THE INJECTORS, TIMED THE PUMP, CHECKED FOR ANYTHING HITTING THE FRAME. I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE PUMP IS THE CULPRIT. MY WIFE LOVES THE TRUCK AND I PROBABLY CAN GUESS WHY IT'S LIKE MY OLD PANHEAD! SO IF SHE'S HAPPY, I'M HAPPY!!! BIG DON THIS COULD TURN OUT TO BE A GOOD THING FOR YOU AND FEMALES IN GENERAL. I SAY VIBRATE ON MEN!!!!

Guys,

i have adjusted valves retorqued the head and bled injectors and the shake is not gettin any better. I am worried. It does not put out any black smoke. it acts as though it is underfueled???? Runs ok but not impressive and shakes till it hits 2000rpm's then either it smoothes out or the frequency is so high it seems to smooth out. Please help. I think I'll have to take it to the shop to let them gig me for more money.

I would guess it's an injector? Where did you get them? Are they new or someone's rebuild?

Also, a leaky line (at the fuel pump) will cause a shake. Could even be you have a bad delivery valve in the pump. And, it could be that there wasn't a problem before you did the work... seems unlikely, though. Do you get any blue or white smoke?

HOwever, I would have the injectors pop-tested somewhere. I'd put even money on one either being stuck or else having an internal leak so there's no fuel coming out of the nozzle when it's not under load.

Guys,

I bought the parts at a local Cummins shop. they will remain nameless until the issue is resolved. the truck does white/blue smoke. It also shakes. I refuse to drive it until me and the shop get squared away. At first they wanted me to pay them to look at it and tell me I had a bad injector. After I told them they were crazy, they decided to schedule time to look at it. There Cummins "certified" mechanics seem to think I may have a bad injector. I sure hope so. They are going to call me tomorrow with the details of what they plan to do and when I can take it in. Thanks for all the help, advise and support. I feel awful, 'Ol Blue is sick and I can't do anything about it, but wait till the doctor is in. If it still want run any better or black smoke, I'm gonna buy someones hopup injectors. Okay first gen people, speak up!! Who offers the best injectors for a pre 93 hotrod!!??!?!!

Okay guys,

Took 'Ol Blue to the local Cummins dealer last night and left it. today after alot of BS they decided they had it fixed. The mechanic replaced one injector and that seemed to clear up most of the white smoke and gave me back some of my power/black smoke. Still shakes. The mechanic mentioned that the injector in another cylinder did not seem right. So I talked to the service guy and he asked the mechanic what should be done to fix this thing. The mechanic suggested swapping all the injectors cause he felt they were not right. I am scared of the cummins recons so I asked about paying the difference to go with new injectors. I think that is where we are headed. I just want 6 new injectors stock will do. How much should new injectors cost?? Don't want to get ripped. So far they have not charged me with any thing. They tried to charge me for 3 hours labor for adjusting the valves. I had set them myself and the mechanic said he checked them but they were not out of spec. So why try to charge me ???? Three hours labor at 65. oo per hour 195. 00 to adjust valves what a Rip!!!!

So Don, why are you scared of the cummins recon injectors? Most of these engines are in commercial use, and if Cummins was supplying bad injectors, they would get BAD news quick as time is money on the commercial side, and I bet they are still warranted aren't they? Hope they are good, as I have a whole engine full of them in mine, which is still apart! Gonna get it running as soon as I get the new 16 cm turbine housing. The Recons I got looked like new, not a trace of evidence that they had ever been in an engine.

I am scared of them because I bought 6 and atleast one was bad, really bad. They only ordered one so that is all they replaced. The mechanic told me they see bad Recon injectors more than he would like. He told the service manager that he did not feel good about the injectors in my truck and suggested the other 5 be replaced. I want to pay the difference and get new ones. That way we know what is going on. The mechanic is pretty confident this will fix the problem. I may then have the timing checked for good measure.

BIG DON: Don't be so afraid of rebuilt injectors. If it makes you feel any better I used to work for a industrial FORD dealership and rebuilt many injectors. You have to replace the tips that are at the end of the injectors. These days with dealer labor costs it's cheaper to replace your injectors than to rebuild them. Also every injector has to be pop tested and checked for leaks before installed in any engine rebuilt or new!!! If your injectors are not set at the same presures it will set the balance of the engine off. If the dealer did not do this than they should pull them all out and test everyone. KEEP THEM HONEST!!! Or should I say they get paid not to be lazy. When it comes to dealerships knowledge is power. Please let us know what you get done. JOE!

I had my valves adjusted by the local Cummins guys a few months ago and it was $95. They said it was an 1. 5 hour job. 3 hours to adjust the valves? My mom can adjust valves quicker than that. Hope you get Ol' Blue back together soon.
