That right, these things are hard to keep up with stoplight to stoplight. He got me by at least a full truck length in a zero 40 race.

Course I am at least 800 lbs heaver than his 3/4 short bed, reg cab, non 4X4.

So, lets open up the checkbook. I can't let it happen again.

The Shame of it all.

I don't think you need to open up your checkbook.

Six gears is a challenge to row through. The Durawhat most likely had an auto and didn't lose boost while shifting like you did. Out on the freeway the results would have been different. I had a new powerpoke try to challenge me on the freeway two days ago. He didn't stand a chance with me already in high gear. He disappeared in my rearview mirror. He still had the temporary license plate in the window and his wife/girlfriend was with him, poor boy. Anyway, not to worry, you still bought the best truck and your six speed is superior to the allison( in my mind anyway, I hate automatics) as well.

Last Resort

Well, sometimes when honor is on the line, you have to abuse the equipment. Just keep your right foot to the floor, and tap the clutch (about 1/8 second worth) to loosen it up and shift like you mean it! It's not real good on the equipment, but it really speeds up the shifting process, and you don't lose boost.

I'm not recommending it for every instance, but sometimes the equipment has to take one for the team... . :D :D :D :D

Riflesmith,

I saw your statement, "I hate autos. " I felt about the same way till I modified mine with a DTT TC & VB. You should drive a truck that has these. I think you would feel differently.

Major weight advantage

Party@33, the DMax you raced has a huge weight advantage, FAR more than 800lbs! The truck you describe is probably right at 6000 to 6200, you are at least 1500lbs heavier than that if you haven't added anything to your dually.

Let's think about who was driving the REAL truck

Ramboy,

The "hate automatics" was not intended as a jab. It was merely a statement of personal preference. I am sure that a modified auto is a pleasure to drive and will hold up to power mods. I just enjoy shifting gears and don't like to have a machine do my thinking for me. ;) ;)

That DMax will also beat you to the pumps to! Who cares? The Dmaxes and powerstrokes will usually beat a cummins in a drag race stock for stock. They have more cubes,V8's and there shorter stroke lets them wind out quicker. However most of us bought these trucks for pulling. Thats where these trucks shine. After owning a 99 Dodge CTD for three years I could of bought any other truck out there. I decided to get a..... well... ... . see sig!

:D :D :D :) :) :)

Get a Large Tow Strap

I have a buddy with a new Maxipad and he likes it because he can beat me from stop light to stop light but he just wont put the tow strap were his mouth is. :D

I forgot his windshield is falling out his power door locks don't work and he has blown a head gasket. :( His Maxipad has been in the shop more than my dodge and it has 54,000miles on it and pulls 35% of the time. :p

I'll stay with the dodge. :D

Big D

For one thing, if you have a manual transmission, you are screwed before you start. Rowing through 6 gears hardly makes a drag racer, and you are loosing your boost pressure between every shift.

Drag racing has very little to do with trying to pull a load up a 6% grade. That's where you would have left him in the dust.

Trust me, I have done it.

Drag racing, with the Dmax automatic transmission, it will wind up quicker with the shorter stroke.

That long stroke of the Cummins will show it's strength with a load up a hill.

I don't put much weight in drag racing diesels.

You absolutely had more torque and HP, but lost it on the shifts.

Shawn

Leave in 2nd gear at about 2000 RPM and when the light turns green floor it and slip the clutch for about 40 feet , that will get your boost up quicker. When it is time to shift leave you right foot on the floor and just use the clutch (Diesels are the best thing to learn this on, you can't over rev it if you miss a gear. ) just long enough to shift.

There are NO RULES for street racin, anticipate the green , if you saw green you where late. Kinda like drag rac'n.

Good luck next time.

BTW, no one yet has driven around me.

But there is always the first time.

It's like comparing horses. Put a race horse up against a work horse, on the track the race horse will shine. Put a little weight behind them and the work horse is right at home, the other one just can't do it. With a Dodge you have yourself one AWESOME work truck.

I'm having a hard time understanding what happened here.

I raced my first DM, and put him to bed. I will say the DM is extremely responsive from idle. But the Cummins pulled away from him with no problem once she was in motion.

I wouldn't want to race a heavily modified DM. .

Granted, my truck is a SWB, but I only have DDII's, PE Comp, DTT TC/VB.

Of course the DM didn't killing the bug population in the area :D

I would have got him in another gear or two. I definetly need to learn to shift better. If someone like Steve St. Laurent had been driving, probably would have one. I wish the guy would have stopped at the next light so I could congratulate him.

He won, there will always be a next time.

And I know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that will a load and a hill, he would have been mine.
