The TDR forums have some competition!

Now, I know this is probably in the wrong forum, but I wanted to post it where it would get a lot of exposure. I'm sure the moderators will move it as they see fit:



As I was cruising the alt. autos. dodge. trucks newsgroup, I came across a post about a guy complaining about the cost of the TDR membership. Another post mentioned how only members can now search the TDR forums (which I don't personally agree with. ) So, he wants to create a similar website that is free, and he has done it! Here is the link:

Looks oddly familiar, and so far they have 31 registered members. Posts are a little skimpy at 120 total with 30 topics. I do not point this out as criticism of the TDR, as I am hopelessly addicted. But, just like most of us hope the Duramax is a success (competition is HEALTHY) I thought I would point it out. We should keep an eye on this scrappy newcomer.....

They will never be as big as the TDR or as informative. And sooner or later, they will be charging for it. I think what little i pay a year for the TDR is WELL worth it. We have a great site which now has a great server, we get the magazine and we have the best Diesel experts out there.

Everybody wants something for free, nobody wants to spend any of there own money, they think they should be able have it for free.

How can you pay almost 35k for a truck, and then complain about 40 bucks a YEAR. Thats cheaper then a tank of fuel!.

Let those whiners have there free site, i am staying right here.

This site here has been free for a long time. It gets more traffic and has better colors.

Will take some time (if ever) for them to compile the historical base of knowledge that is buried within the TDR site. Wouldn't be surprised to see links from there to here in the near future.



One thing I learned long ago - free coffee is bad coffee. If you are optimizing on $35 then should probably pick another vehicle to drive - hear Yugos are cheap and in good supply. Gambling men should consider a Pinto with Firestone 500's, or maybe an upgrade to an Explorer with Firestone ATX's?

I can understand being frugal with your money, but come ON! At 35 a year, The TDR is the best bargain going. Where else can someone go if they are not mechanically oriented and get free advice or actual labor? I'm sure I speak for many when I say that it gives a little peace of mind knowing that if I'm in a totally unfamiliar area, and break down, there's probably a good chance that a TDR member will lend a hand.

He!!, I thought the TDR was an absolute bargain at $35. when I was only receiving the quarterly magazines (for the information provided)... the website/BB is only icing on the cake!

Moving to Website Forum..

The "idea" of a free website is fine and dandy, until the traffic level becomes one of such that it gets very exspensive. Bandwidth is the most exspensive part of maintaining a website. Then of course added users means more load on the server etc, etc. If he wants to try it by all means I wish him good luck with his endeavor.



I asked him to email Robin or Robert Patton on why he was unhappy with the new forum system, he said he didn't like them but didn't state why. I think these new forums are great, lots of neat lil secrets and features. I like it better then the newest UBB version. He also said the information "disappeared" which is true the boards were pruned to 6 months old and the info was saved onto a CD and is being "archieved" so that we can view the info just can't post to it anymore. But its not a simple task, so it might be a lil bit before its completed.

As has been stated before. I have gotten a great deal more value from this site than the 35 bucks a year, being very mechanically challenged I go to this site and the members on it for advice and instruction. Best money ever spent next to the shop manual. Jack

I've seen it often enough in my business and with consumers in general. You have to kiss their a$$ and they expect million dollar service for a hundred bucks. All I would say to this guy is hey, come on in, the water is warm and there is lots of room for more. Technically speaking, the website is free. It has just been linked to the magazine. I know, I know, that's a technical point but I'm sticking to it

I haven't been a member long, but I've been

watching for months. For the price there is none

better. The TDR will be recieving a check each

year from me as long as I'm kicking.

$35 to TDR for excellent, accurate information on how to mantain the "Beast" versus say, $350 to DC for uninformed 8-5 advice or all the problems associated with "free advice". Hmmmmm, I know where I'm gonna "park" my truck!

I have been a member for almost two years and know without a doubt that it was a wise decision. I have saved hundreds of dollars in maintenance, etc... that I have done myself... only able to do because of the TDR and its members !!



Money well spent...



I am anxiously awaiting issue #33 of the TDR !

$35 a year is cheap. An national car club I use to belong to charged the same and all we received was a monthly magazine that was uninformitive and I was able to read in 10 minutes

$35 a year keeps the riff-raff out. Just take a look at the free Ford site, 100+ posts on each thread, not only does it make it longer to read but a lot of it is useless info to sift out. This site would be the same way, many times the number of visitors out-numbers the members.
