I drive up I-70 and over the pass and then on to Vail Pass and beyond many times a year both ways. It can be tough pulling those grades for those distances at that elevation and what makes it worse is the multitude of idiot drivers on the road with you who have no concept of what the heck is going on around them. In the summer time you don't have to worry about going too slow on a Friday night, Saturday or Sunday evening due to all the traffic you are lucky to go 25mph. Even worse in the winter with ski season and everyone heading up or heading home it can add hours to the trip. It is approx. 75 miles to Copper mountain ski area and in good traffic can take about 75-80 minutes on a bad day it can take 3+ hours with traffic add in a snowstorm and not uncommon to take 5 hours. I avoid it like the plague on the weekends. They have tried a variety of ideas to make it better rolling road blocks by hwy patrol, opening one lane of traffic goinf the opposite direction of travel in the tunnel to add an additional lane of traffic in the busy direction. They have talked about adding lanes tot he tune of billons of dolalrs
Another great one here is Wolf Creek Pass it is the main east west artery in the southern half of the state. It is only a US highway so some 2 lane some 3 lane and some 4 lane on the pass being a US highway the 'specs' for the roadway are less than interstate freeways- lane width, sharpness of turns etc going down either side over 26k and you are restricted to 25mph. I find it harder on the truck doing it due to the several hairpin or sharp turns and having to slow down for them then trying to get back up to speed. It is also a significantly prettier drive.
