tires

RV gravel drive - how to?

I personally would rather spend my money regearing my truck then to buy a larger tire to change RPM's cuz you can save more in the long run if you calculate the differences between a larger tire and the same gear vs same size tire and different gear. But when we talk about the cost advantage of not haveing to buy tires vs mileage loss the cost of 22. 5's are cheaper over 200K miles (sorry another guy posted about 22. 5's so I spend 20 minutes with numbers on his stuff and he wanted the truck for 200K miles and Im not going to do it on the 19. 5's)

My truck is a 2004. 5 3500 DRW and it rights like a asphalt compacter would ride do 50 mph. When I bought my truck I could hardly keep the rear wheel of the truck on the concrete beltways everytime I hit a seam in the concrete doing 60 MPH. I would hit it and the truck bounces in the rear and gets side ways a bit and that was with the factory goodyear tires, 17" DRW wheels, and stock suspension that had never had never pulled anything except using the factory tow hitch. Now the suspension is broke in more cuz I took the truck 4 wheeling alot but I still have problems with the harsh ride.

Oh and one more thing this would not be for those that have their tires on and off all the time cuz you do get hemroids and they do hurt. I used to work at a 4WD shop and got the same problems everyone else had. One guy who had been there many years had to have surgery to get it cut off cuz it hurt so bad he wouldn't go potty. When I was there and realized everyone else had them I denied it at first then it sort of slipped out I had them so I started crack hemroids jokes and they were like you mean a hernia and I was like no hemroids from lifting these heavy *** swampers all the dern time.

I am honestly afraid to go to the doctor about it cuz what if he is gay? and also you know he will be trying to make sure my insides are ok and I be dern if any one is to even stick a bore scope used to look inside of engines on me. and them things are small in diameter.

Seems to me that there are two general opinions here, one based on safety and the other based on perceived costs and mileage. I'd rather have an added safety margin based on my use of the truck and as for the cost, part of that is a pay me now or later issue with some anticipated savings in tire changes and roadside repairs/etc.

I'm in the process of having some steel wheels made for both the SRW and the DRW trucks for 19. 5" for the following reason... .

May I ask who is making your wheels? I'm thinking of having my stock wheels widened.

Thanks

I had 10 lug 19. 5's on my 2003 dually and I would not have traded them for anything. The look was flipping awesome and the control, well, I could not overload them. Mileage went up about 1. 5 mpg too.

I've been overseas on another project... and ran into a wheel manufacture that makes wheels for Europe... and some of the small trucks using Michlin over there... Since my 550 runs well on the Michelin front tires and the UPS recaps on the back I've specked the wheels at 6. 75" wheel width for that application... that tire in a G rating as I remember is rated at 4050 per tire and the wheels meet those standards... .

I've got the samples ready, one for a SRW and a DRW waiting on some casting samples we are having done... they were to be air freighted to me tomorrow but because of a machine tool problem its on hold for a few days to sort out a problem...

The guys in the wheel plant had DOT standards in their information... . so we are going to meet those standards... . Hope that helps...

Jim, Keep us posted on what you come up with. I would love to change my 17's to 19. 5's for the load rating and the longer wear.

Super Singles?

Anyone make a super single tire in 19. 5"? It would be cool replace the duals with a super if someone made a rim and tire in that size.

I tow as heavy as anybody here does, and I'll never overload a stock sized 17" tire with duals. 3,000#+ per tire is dang hard to overload. However, I went with the 19. 5's for the wear. My Mich XDE M/S 245's went 105K before I changed them out. They still have 15-20K left, but I swapped for winter.

I actually lost MPG going with the heavy Rickson 6. 75" rim and the Mich 245's. Just too much weight to spin. The only thing I'd do different is go with th 6" rim and stay with a 225 tire.

i want to know more about the super single,i want to take the duals off my truck and put singles on. who makesa wheel? mich makes the tire i guess?

I'm sure if you do a lot of stop and go driving, the larger Rickson's would put you at a disadvantage due to the weight. I know my steel Ricksons and 265 / 19. 5's are really heavy, no doubt about it, and they take a lot more snoose to get 'em rolling and more brake to stop too. But on the plus side, once you get 'em moving, if you have them aired up at all they really roll easy and just keep on rolling over the smaller imperfections in the road. They're a lot like having a bigger flywheel in my opinion. I don't think I lost much fuel mileage with them at all. Whatever amount I may be down I attribute to winter fuel, not the tires/wheels.

I used to tow a 40' gooseneck(3-4 times a month) with my 04'. The stock tires were cracking badly and had very little tread left a 26K. Bought rickson steel 19. 5's and now at 50K you can even tell any wear. I also went to a 265/70 to bring down the rpm at highway speeds. The way they're wearing now, I should easily get 150K out of them. (As soon as the 07. 5 comes in, aluminum 19. 5s are goin on ;) )

Before/after

I believe I saw you hauling some jeeps on a flatbed last year (route 53 south near Palatine). Truck sounded killer pulling all that weight down the highway.
