well after 3 different pusher pumps i decided to get serious about a fix. i looked at the fass system and although it looks to be a great product, i don't like the thought of another electric pump to fail.

i thought about the old p-pump trucks and you almost never hear of a lift pump problem from those lp's.

as one of the bonuses to the www.dieseldynamics.com camshaft is the fact that it has the lift pump lobe on the cam shaft. i was a little worried about the high pressure from the 12v lift pump so i called down to diesel dynamics so make sure i wouldn't hurt my hotrod vp-44 from them. keith told me not to worry, they had put 20k+ miles on a stock vp-44 and never had a problem with the high pressure.

so i ordered one up and installed it. the whole thing cost $160 inlcuding freight. the only thing you need to get is a adapter plate that goes in between the block and the pump. i did have to remove one of the ecm bolts becuase it hit my a/n fitting on the top of the pump.

i started my truck and it just buries my 30psi guage at idle. no matter what i do it will not budge off of 30psi. keith told me it will make 50psi at idle and about 60psi at 3000rpm. i can't verify that but i know it's over 30psi:eek:

granted my truck is only making about 550rwhp right now, i still have in my baby injectors. but i can't see why anyone would need 1/2 lines. my stock lines will flow plenty of fuel. my last setup was the holley black pump and the stock lp, when the setup was new it would run 30psi at idle and drop down to 10psi at wot. i almost upgraded my lines to try and help my pressure drop. i now see i just didn't have enough pump. :D i will keep everyone updated as to how it performs. it quieted down my truck a ton. i will be putting in my monster injectors for may madness and we will see if i can pull it down to 30psi.

Jim. . did you have a relief / bypass for starting. . or did you have a hard to start condition after install ??

very interesting. . bet the fuel bypass inside the VP is wide open now LOL

gary

i have had no hard start problems yet. if the truck sits overnight the pressure drops to about 10psi. if i just shut it off for a few minutes it drops down to 20psi.

Remember this pump doesn't start to run until the engine is running so you don't get the high pressure until after it is running. I think the hard starting issue happens when you are first cranking it and you have 25+ pounds. Very cool Jim I always wondered why someone hasn't tried that in the past. Another excuse to have a cam installed in a 24 valver now I just need a good excuse for my 12 valver.

Wow, talk about an expensive solution to the problem!

But I like the idea of it, and as long as the VP44 can withstand it in the long term, this would be a great excuse to get that cam.

Cheap for people that have the cam, but expensive for most of us that don't.

Can't wait to get my DD Cam. Honestly this is one of the reasons for doing it.

BTW Jim, where have you been? Glad to see you back. :)

ya ?

This is a stock 12v lift pump? The ones I have put on and check only had about 25 psi. at the p pump and I think that is the stock spec too.

short shift

i have been looking at a few regulators but i want one that has a bypass.

sleddy

yada yada, now you really know how little fuel a vp-44 can flow. :D have you put a guage on your truck to see how low it was dropping? or did you just add a electric pump? are you using the electric pump as a pusher or are you replacing it completely?

csevers

i think the p7100 must have a larger return circuit.

jim

What about Bosch saying over 25psi and you were asking for serious long term problems in the VP44? I'm sure I read that somewhere. Wasn't that the issue with installing dual series OEM pumps? 15+15=30 and that was too much?

Cool fix however. Imaging how easy all this would be if the OEM cam had the lobe for some reason.

interesting- could the lobe be altered to get that much psi if the 12vers are seeing less????

DD has been running this for 20k on a stock pump without a regulator/bypass??

C-strkn--how many miles are on your hotrod VP??

I'm 3 months away from seeing 3 yrs on my setup----chris

Must be nice to be retired;)

Gary, I thought your truck was done and ready to pull a fifth wheel. Does this mean our trucks are never done?

Well I know they're never done, but I'm hoping I can quite trying to appease the horse power gods soon. I need to start saving up for a T-Rex suspension.

You know I made the same mistake the other day and thought my truck was done but I sure would like to have some sort of air ride suspension.

Hey Jim back on topic do you think the return system is differn't on a 24 valver because I only see about 25 to 28 lbs on my 12 valve pump?

chris

i have mark's old pump, it had over 15k when i got it. i have put over 30k on it with no problems.

Ncostello

i was worried about this also, i have found a regulator that i can set upto 25psi that i might try. like i said i ran over 30psi with my old setup at idle and at cruise.
