Has anyone had experience with after-market shifters on the nv5600? have 125k on my 03 and it still has diffiulty getting into 2nd or reverse at times. It is our daily driver for about 6 months of the year so it gets frustrating in traffic at times.

Have you changed the transmission oil? Or tried a different oil? Sometimes either of those things will help.

If the above don't give you any relief the it could be the pilot bearing not working like it should or even the throwout bearing or clutch. I know, not what you wanted to hear.

Definitely try an oil change or a different oil first.

Royal Purple Synchro Mesh has worked well for me when I have changed from Mopar to it. I have run some RP 100,000 miles before shifting started getting worse.

So there are three ways to get extra fluid into the 5600; fill through the shifter housing, park on a hill or add an elbow to the fill plug. I would like to do the hardest of these three. I thought (mistakenly) that it would be easy to screw a black pipe elbow in to the fill hole and be done. Nope, those are definitely not pipe threads. I will shorten this post up by simply asking, does anyone have the dimensions of the fill plug so I can find an elbow that will fit?

Metric Pipe Thread

Since it takes a 17mm allen wrench to remove the plug, I would guess it is a metric pipe plug not an american NPT thread.

There is another option for getting more oil into the NV5600. A pipe thread bung can be welded in the PTO cover plate, as high up as you can get it, and then a plug screwed into the bung. Supposedly this will permit 7 qts to be put in and also would allow a place to check the fluid level. I have bought two of these from Standard Transmission in Fort Worth, one for each truck. The first one will be installed on Black Sheep, my '01, this coming week.

I changed the oil in my NV5600 today and was only able to get 4 quarts in on level ground. I jacked up the left rear about 18" and was able to get another pint in. Is that about right? I'll park it on a hillside or jack up both front and rear and try to get all 7 quarts in. I thought about putting an elbow in the filler hole with a piece of pipe extending up about 4" with a cap, but the plug has oddball threads. I guess one could easily drill a hole in the plug and braze an elbow to it. That would work.

Thats normal. If the syncro stops the input shaft when both matching gears are in a mis-match, they can't fit. Let the clutch out and try again.

^^THIS^^

Sometimes shifting to a different gear also helps. This is common in a lot of standard transmissions.

If you double clutch shifts when transmission is cold, takes care of stiff shifting issues. Best way to make balky shifting go away is to put a load behind it:rolleyes:

Try using a squirt top on your bottle of lube. Then remove the uppermost PTO cover bolt (there are 6, one top, one bottom, two on each side. ) and then you can squirt the lube in.

If you really want to get high tech you can take a 3/8-16 bolt and cut the head off. Then chuck up on the bolt and drill an 1/8" hole down the middle on a lathe. Then temporarily thread the new trick bolt into the upper PTO cover bolt. Connect a 3/8" hose the the bolt and then connect the other end to a plastic lube pump that you can buy to screw in the quart of lube. Then pump as much lube as you want in.
