Believe it or don't, but the city of Wyoming Michigan had one of those things (not sure which model) installed about 150' from the back door of my house. They would test it every couple of weeks. It was used as a tornado and civil defense warning (can you say "nuke attack"). Just the sound of the enginie starting gave me the willies. When they ran it for a tornado warning, we were the first to know. I did get used to it as I got a little older.

One of these was listed on eBay about 2 years ago. Already mounted on a trailer and not too far from home. I was very tempted... .

Would be sweet to fire that thing off when you get one of those annoying tailgaters... ... The really sweet set-up would be to have it mounted a little high on the trailer so that you could put it on a pivotting base. :-laf You would be the only one for at least several hundred feet. Oo.
