For clarification, I bought the entire assembly. (Link I posted yesterday). When you buy the entire actuator assembly they have to be calibrated. It's as simple as aligning the arm on the turbo with an alignment pin provided with the kit, plugging in the new actuator, and running the calibration sequence. It took less than 30 seconds on the pre assembly Cal and about the same on the post assembly Cal. I took some pictures when I did this job. I can start a new thread and throw them up in the next day or so if there's any interest. It's a very straight forward job.
In my opinion this is the way they should be replaced. If not, why wouldn't Cummins provide just the shell.
There are moving parts within the housing. Not only that but you really should remove the actuator gear housing to ensure the turbo moves freely.
All just opinions of course.
I'm curious which units were you looking at that claim plug and play? Since you stated they aren't much more than what I paid ($300) I am guessing it isn't the shell offered by City Diesel (Geno's).
I will have to go back ,and find where I saw those, I should of saved them. It was like four hundred something, if I remember. I will look. Thanks for the info.
Trying to understand the deal here with these turbo's. Have had diesel trucks now for nearly 22 years, but have had no turbo issues ( knock on wood ) My trucks are used mostly for towing, and at that not a terrible amount of miles. Try to run them a bit hard to keep them healthy so to speak .
