Diesel will start with a match. Diesel mixed with saw shavings is a common wood stove starter mix in back country camps.

Guess I'll stick to my kill switch and not use the WIF valve to snuff my CTD. ;)

Perhaps that is because it is mixed with the saw shavings. I know there was a post on here last year where someone showed a gas station attendant that it would not light with a match, after the attendant gave him crap about leaving his truck running while filling.

About half of all the truck I see at truck stops, shut their rigs down.

Are they sheep? Are they scared someone might drive off with their truck (no extra key)? who knows.

I leave mine running, if it's going to idle for more then 30 minutes, i'll make sure the EGT are under 300 and shut thigns off. other wise, they can go !@#$ off, and call the cops. :) they won't get my $$$ :)

or is it FINALLY $$ now? :)

Even with gassers, i'll leave them running. I have this habbit of always grounding my self to the truck/car as I exit. :)

And again, not to get too far off topic, How is the motor running going to make the difference with gassers? If you DO NOT GROUND your self, go to pump and then create the static shock from your hand to your car with the nozzel pouring, IT WILL STILL IGNITE, if there are enough fumes and the moons are aligned. motor running or not...

In liquid form neither diesel nor gasoline will ignite with a match. This is because there is no oxidizer (although gasoline may have some dissolved oxygen... I'm not sure). The point is the fuel/air ratio is not right. Now, if you let the fuel (be it gas or diesel) evaporate, the fumes certainly WILL ignite with a match. Since your chances of knowing whether the vaporization rate is "safe", it would not be wise to actually attempt to light either diesel or gasoline with a match.

Remember - "normal" liquids (those without a dissolved oxidizer) will not burn except at the surface where vaporization produces a proper fuel/air ratio. And any fuel with a dissolved oxidizer would be so dangerous that you wouldn't want to go anywhere near it.

So I reckon when you light the diesel/air mixture at the surface of the liquid diesel the temperature raises causing further vaporization of the diesel which then burns.

It sure seems to my foggy ol' mind I've put straight diesel on slash piles to get them started. And it wasn't the slash that started the diesel.

Sigh... . sounds like an experiment is going to have to happen. ;)

I reckon so. Heat from combustion at the surface increases the vaporization rate, which increases the burning rate, and so on until your hair and everything in the immediate area is on fire. That's when you know things are not going your way.
