Called my friendly neighborhood Dodge dealer (honestly, they are friendly) to order a lift pump... they want over 450 bucks. Called a Cummins dealer which is an hour away... 150 bucks plus around 5 bucks to ship. I could understand a small difference but how can Dodge possibly justify charging 3 TIMES the price when you know Cummins is still making a nice profit at $150?

Tell me about it. I experienced the same thing and when I called them on it they said Cummins had to have quoted me the price of a 12 valve lift pump. The dealer ended up replacing the lift pump under the 100,000 mile engine warrenty though.
 
I'm not even going to ask about my warranty... I should try though just to see what they say. #ad
Chris, I'm still waiting to see what comes out of all the R&D everyone is doing on the fuel system (much appreciated by the way). Any good word on that Summit pump? The price sure looks good.

I thought the same way and when I talked to the service manager he said my mods (SEE SIG could not possible affect the lift pump and they were more that happy to do it.

When I bought my lift pump from cummins they did not have one and ordered it from another cummins dealer and had it shipped directly to me and charged to my credit card over the phone it cost $150. 00. When the pump arrived two days later I opened the invoice, cummins charge to me $150. 00, cummins charge to cummins, oops $85. 00. Oh well It's better then what my dealer wanted $395. 00.

My dealer wanted $398. I got one shipped to me from cummins for about $140. In my opinion dealers are only good for the initial purchase of the truck. Mine does not know squat about diesels.

I noticed The dealer that I bought my truck at had some slip on tow mirrors for $65. 00. I was at tractor supply and they had the same mirrors for $25. 00

Had to add another one... flywheel from Dodge $780... flywheel from Cummins $250 and he said I could probably get it cheaper elsewhere. Looks like the general rule here is to take the Cummins price and multiply it by 3 to get the Dodge price.
 
Cummins West in Sactramento quoted me $129 for a 98. 5 lift pump which is one that supercedes the original pump, but they order it by strictly by engine #. Which brings up a question: what is the highest pressure that the VP44 is is designed to handle?

Perhaps Dodge highly trained techs charge $395. 00 for a lift pump BECAUSE it takes them 3 days to diagnose the problem and it takes at least 5 phone calls to the DC "hotline" to decide by comittee if the lift pump has indeed failed.

For the hassle factor involved in getting warranty work, I'll gladly pay $139. 00 for a lift pump.

Like what someone said, "Dodge dealer is ONLY good for the initial purchase. "

Needed an injector line for my 24 valve,the dodge dealer wanted $141. 00. My local cummins dealer wanted $37. 50. Cummins dealer was an extra 15 min. drive . Guess where I went?
 
I totally agree with PUFF! This TDR site is worth it's money in gold for all of the information & experience that is available to us regarding pricing and repairs!!!!!
 
LOL, Just like the fuel filters at the dealer are $45. 00 and $11. 27 at cummins. I love this site! Or do I? Hmmmm new DTT VB TC, EZ, Exhaust, injectors... ... . I was going to say this site has saved me money LOL... Ya right, Bombing is worse than crack.
