For the obvious benefits of warmer starts in this cooler climate, I am considering a thermostat controlled block heater cord, something that would turn on when the outside temperature drops below, say, 40F. Can anyone out there advise me on a manufacturer or source of such a device or on alternatives? Thanks in advance.

Get a Thermocube at most hardware plumbing depts. They're made to protect plumbing from freezing, turn on at 35°F,about $20 USD.

I've been looking for over a month for the Thermo Cube and no one in this area has a clue what I'm talking about. Several Ace Hardware stores went out of their way and looked through all of their product catalogs and could find nothing. Grin, maybe its the part of the country?

Found the Thermo Cube site, so here it is for anyone else having the same problem:

Their TC-3 model is two outlet, turns on at 35 and off at 45 and is the only one they will sell direct. It is $15. 95 and must include shipping because they told me to send in a check for multiple of that amount for each one I wanted.

Noma makes a thermostatic block heater timer, you should be able to find one at Canadian Tire. I generaly leave mine plugged in overnight below freezing, you can also turn the outside power on before going to bed.

You can usually find a freeze protector for pool pumps at most pool stores. I'm glad that you mentioned this because I think I might use ours for just that reason. I think this is the same as the thermocube that y'all are talking about.

My weekday schedule is fixed enough to use a timed circuit. I watch the overnight temperature forecast and adjust the "time on" to assure a warm truck without killing the monthly electric bill.

I got a two pack of Intermatic TIME-ALL® plug-in multipurpose timers for under $10. 00

Maybe you could use a timer in conjunction with a Thermo Cube. Set a timer and the Cube will only power the block heater if the preset temperatures are reached.

Warmly
