Dumb question: I want to change out to a 180, but have never done it on this engine. My last Tstat change was on a gasser 360. It was a pain; had to take the fan off if I remember correctly. (Maybe that was when I replaced the water pump ... I don't remember. )

Anyway ... what does it entail?

Drain out a couple gallons of coolant

Remove the two or three bolts from the thermostat housing

Pull out the thermostat and install the new one

Replace the housing and tighten the bolts

Refill with coolant

A good time to do this is while you're changing your coolant, that way you start fresh.

Yes. The easiet you will find. Drain out some of the coolant. I went ahead and changed my coolant when I did my Thermostat. Made it a complete job.

Look at where the top radiator hose connects to the engine head. Take the 3 bolts out of the flange and the thermostat is under the flange. Lift the flange up and use a screw driver to pry out the old thermostat. Place the new thermostat in the same way as the old one came out. Replace flange over thermostat. Replace bolts in flange. Refill with coolant. Done!

Note: Be sure to check coolant for a few days after refilling. It sometimes takes a while to get all the air out... you may need to add some coolant later.

I just went out and looked under the hood, and now I feel embarassed for even asking. This is going to be very easy compated to the gasser 360. That was a major pain.

I tried to do it on my Gasser 360 and GAVE UP. On the second Gen cummins, its a piece of cake. 10 minutes tops.

Very readily accessable.

Watch the torque on the bolts when you put it back together. I have seen posts about how easy it is to break them. Sorry but I can't remember the correct torque. Someone will Im sure

I got mine from Cummins ... the part number that Fritz's web page has been superceded by another, but it looks fine, is marked 180, and should work. It is the one with the "JigglePins. "

I just like saying "JigglePins. "

The thing I like best...

is the ease of changing the water pump (ever change one on a old model gasser?). No such thing as easy. Whole other story on the Cummins B5. 9L. It just does not get any easier. :D

If you can call it a downside, they last forever, so you probably will never know the joy of chaning one. I changed the one on my '92 at 180,000+, but I am still trucking with the '99. :)
