Thermostat part #

Looked up in the FAQ's and you guys have like 3 different numbers listed... Which one is correct for a first gen that doesn't cycle constantly? Winter arrived here last night. . ( had to dig out a flannel shirt this morning :-laf ) temp in truck will swing from first mark in normal to 1/2 way point... very annoying to me.

Call Cummins- they will have the latest number. They supercede stuff every year or so. No rhyme or reason.



I got told $30 for a new t-stat, so I just kept the parts store $10 t-stat in there. It was annoying, but the Cummins t-stat didnt look any different. I think as long as I have heat, I will be happy. Besides, with Snider's Alignment special, the spoke on the wheel blocks the temp gauge when tracking straight, anyway

Use a 3917324 or whatever supercedes it. The other one commonly mentioned is NOT correct according the CPL or the Cummins parts manual that applies to engines builts for Chrysler vehicles.

That's funny. CPL, Chrysler ah who cares :-laf ! It's a Cummins B series and that is all that matters to me. MM, if you care to not have a cycling t-stat use the t-stat part number I suggested in the FAQ's. I think it's 3802968.



I thought use 1st genners didn't care about boundaries, CPL's, OEM, "can't use this, can't use that, we don't have anything for 1st gen's, Dodge made a truck before 94" etc etc... . Heck I have all kinds of junkyard parts on my trucks, parts from all different applications of the B-series Cummins, C-series, M11, John Deere, I'm sure there's some others that donated their organs for my trucks can't think of anymore right now.

3802968 does NOT work as well as the 3917324 in my truck!



The 3802968 might be on the parts list for a school bus but not our trucks... .

While it does not do the windshield wiper action of back and forth repeatedly, it does go high at least once before setttling in place. On the other hand, the 3917324 works perfectly. My truck is a 5 speed without the heat exchanger for the transmission, I am not sure if this makes a difference.

Neither should be required if you got a good part number. I can't comment on the 'updated' part numbers. I've only used the old number for about 3 years. I think it originally was for a stationary fire engine. I have two other B-series engines right now and one of them is running, it exhibits the cycling t-stat. If I ever get around to caring about it, I'll spend the $30 for a 2968 stat.

I bet there ain't any difference at all, both interchangeable. I installed a new model cylinder head on my 89 engine. Used the 89 t-stat housing and 89 t-stat (3802968). Maybe there's a clearance issue with the 1st and 2nd gen t-stat housings, but not the stats.

Well, finally got to Cummins this morning. The one number has been superceded by a new number( imagine that). Now for the good part, the one number is a "kit" with O ring and a "shim" I guess for the housing to bracket. Same t-stat , just one is the t-stat by itself, and the kit, for $1. 21 more comes with a new o ring. I'll post #'s later, reciept is out in one of the trucks.

BT explained what that 'shim' is for in an old post. It's a template used to trim material out of the housing or cylinder head I believe. You want to replace the donut gasket (o ring). So 3802968 is no longer available?

3802968 is still available, according to my Cummins folk, that is the T -stat only. Part # 3917324 has been superceded by part# 3972071, which is the "kit", contains the same identical T stat that comes seperately, make sense??

IIRC, when I bought 3802968, it came with the o-ring and template/gasket/trash piece. Give that new one a shot and report back to us:-laf.

Seems to be doing what I need it too, runs just a needles width above the 1/3 line in the normal range, MAY settle back to the 1/3 line and appears to stay there. See what happens when it finds its way into some really cold stuff!

My 3917324 thermostat was stamped in the housing with that part number so I think the parts guys were incorrect kit vs no-kit. Glad to hear its working correctly.

Thats the number that's embossed on both T stats I looked at, kit (which I bought) and no-kit.
