I just bought a new thermostat from the local International heavy truck place, it is a genuine Cummins part #3946849. I just searched a bunch of old thermostat theads, this does appear to be the correct number for a Cummins 190° thermostat. The parts guy was new and so I don't have a lot of faith in his ability. He was saying the part number had been superseded at least once. I can't find a temperature stamped on the thermostat which I find a bit odd. Also this part has a moulded rubber seal as a part of the unit and he was telling me no "O" ring is required. Can somebody confirm that I have the right part for a 2001 and also whether I am getting the correct story on the "O" ring. I am getting ready to replace the hoses, thermostat and coolant and would prefer to not have any surprises after I get it all apart.

BTW, this was a pricy thermostat, $59. 86. Their Fleetguard ES EG premix was $10. 02 per gallon which I thought was reasonable.

TIA

The thermostat I took out of my '01 was a 190 degree thermostat. I replaced it with the newest model out of the 3rd gens. The price was around what you paid for yours. The new thermostat is a 180 degree thermostat with a slow reaction time. It won't snap open and shut like the old thermostat.

I'll have to ask Pablo when I see him. He's the one that ordered it for me.

I know the oldest one was superceded with one that wasn't prone to breaking as much. The new 3rd gen one is totally different looking.

This came from an older thread but I have the part number being 3954194 for a 180* and 3937171 for a 190*. Perhaps they've changed them but these are supposed to be the Cummins part numbers for our trucks.
