Is ther more than one thermostat (180*) available? The engine I'd use it in is a '89 Cummins. How hot is too hot for these engines?

These engines run cool from my experience , 175-185 is where mine runs under all conditions , even towing , maybe a little cool in winter .
But from reading here & els where , get your T stat from Cummins or who ever can get it from them .
I plug rad in winter for heat & warm up , plus plug in .

The current Cummins p/n for the stat is 3802968 ( old p/n 3802273 )and it comes with the rubber seal. It is 83*C or about 180*F and is the only temp Cummins offers. Shadrach

depends who you ask...

how hot does yours get?

I don't know the exact temperature, but the heater blows cold air and you can put your hand on the radiator with no discomfort. I have hooked my Ford gauge to the Dodge sending unit and it bearly moves off of the cold mark. I bought a Ford sending unit today I plan to install in the next day or two. I blocked the radiator about 80% on saturday, and got the gauge about 1/2 way between cold and normal, and warm air was blownig from the heater

If you want a t-stat hotter than 180*, you'll have to get one from a parts house, such as NAPA or Autozone, I think there's a 190* available. Too hot would be water temp higher than about 215* IMO.
