Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fass question

Hello all,

I just replaced my thermostat, and have a few questions, firstly the old one has what looks like rubber pinched in it, any idea what this is? (it's the one on the right). Second, the new one seems to have a smaller hole in the middle, will this affect the amount of coolant that can flow? I tow heavy and am concerned this will cause a problem in the summer with a load on. Third, I also picked up a gasket, a thick rubber affair, and there was no old one, and nowhere for it to really go. any tips are appreciated!

There isn't a gasket on the trucks. The marine engines have that gasket that the thermostat sits in. It is there so boats can pull the t-stat and not leak. Gen-sets also use that housing.

If you are worried, just get a 180 T-stat from Cummins. It will typically never get over about 200 on the steepest hills with the heaviest loads.

Thanks, next time I will just go to Cummins, just a bit of a drive.

I had already installed this new one, so I am out the 30 bucks either way.

If it heats up more than normal on my next tow, I will swap it out asap.

Wish I knew where the rubber trapped in the old one came from, makes me

a touch nervous.

Thanks!

The original thermostat had a rubber cap on the part that restricts/stops water flow untill it is opened, it would sometimes come off and restrict the flow (I had this happen on two in a 99). That is probably part of that piece. The new thermostat should solve your problems. bg
