Greeting's it's almost time to change coolant and thermostsat, I went to Cummins West here in town and OMG $60. 00 is their anything special about a Cummins thermostat or will a genaric Stant work as well? I looked at Dieselsite and they had them for around $35. 00. What's up with the thermostat's. TIA Mike

Mine went bad just before Thanksgiving. I had gotten it from Cummins about 3 years +/- ago for $17 and change, this time it cost $39. 00 I was like #@$%! makes this thing so special? But got it anyway. The Stant units may work but not last as long, don't know? $60 could buy you 2 Stants, a few good cigars and a case of decent beer;). I'd go this way if I had to do it again and the cost was $60, I'd keep the 1/4" drive socket set and spare stat in the truck - ridiculous :{

I am sure I can do better,even if I have to call my b-inlaw who is sales mngr. at Peterbilt although it just kills me to do it, if you know what I mean!

Thanks 6naline01..... Mike#@$%!

I just paid $89 for a thermostat at my local dealer. I tried an after market one about five months ago. Paid $43 for it, and it started acting up so I just bit the bullet and went back with the genuine over priced part hoping that it will go another 169000+ miles.

Allot of the dealers have what they call an uplifted price. It is more than the mfg. 's suggested list price. They usually quote/charge the uplifted price to smaller and low volume customers. If you ask them what they can do on the price or tell them you called another Cummins dealer and was quoted the $39. 00 price, they should drop the price. I also bought the same T-stat from Cummins West for $39. 00. If they don't budge off the price go to another Cummins dealer, $65. 00 is too much.
Regards, Mike.

Does anyone know who makes the thermostat for cummins? The one I tried from O'REILLY was made in Germany. Only lasted about five months and went bad. The cummins part looks like a deeper type thermostat than the aftermarket. I had to pay way to much, but we don't many alternatives where I live.

i got a stant from rockauto.com for my dads 99, i think it was around $30. I got the 190 degree one, is that the right one to get? I have never replaced the one in my truck.

190 is what you will get at a stealership/auto parts store. i paid 40ish for a 180 thru cummins. no regrets!!!! runs alot better now!!!!

just for your info, the hotter the engine the better the wear, cycling up and down is not good!. think about the nascar engines-215 -220* all day long. my . o2$ is 190* thermo. is what you want.
