O. K. , call me stupid. I got in my truck awhile ago to start it (it was 10 below zero here last night, O. K. ?). I also let my two Portuguese water dogs in the truck because they go with me everywhere. Something on my clothing, gloves or steering wheel must have bumped the lock button on the truck key (yeah, I heard the beep but the driver's door unlocks when it's opened, right?).

So I got in, started the truck, then got back out to load some trash to leave for the garbage man. Naturally, I closed the door because, as I said, it's cold outside and I didn't want my dogs getting out. It was a huge shock when I tried to get back in the truck and found all four doors locked. :{

So here I sit, outside the truck, waiting from my wife to drive home from work and unlock the door with her set of keys. The girls, as I call the dogs, are in the truck wondering what's going on because I've never treated them this way before. My wife tried to come home the usual way on CR 1 but a 5-car pile-up at the bottom of Pisgah Hill was blocking up things. So she's coming around the other way on SH 67 where someone said a whiteout is blowing across the highway.

In the meantime, my truck is in the carport idling, getting absolutely zero miles per gallon. The girls think I'm nuts and my wife will show up in about an hour with that "How could you do this to me" look on her face for making her drive through a whiteout. :-{}

Lord only knows what will happen next. Anybody got a spare bedroom?

Jeremiah, that's too funny... :-laf :-laf I know it wasn't at the time. I just hope you also had the heat on so the dogs didn't get cold waiting. I did the same thing once a long time ago, fortunally it was during the summer. Had to wait about an hour for a lock smith with the truck running. I have since put a "hide a key" on the truck, so I won't feel so stupid if I do it again. Come to think about it, I better go see if the spare key is still there?? :rolleyes:

Jeremiah,

Go to hardware store get a key made for a buck or 2, won't start engine but will work on the door. That way this will never happen again, How do you know that one of the dogs didn't hit the door lock button on one of the front doors arm rests

How do you like your dogs I have been wanting a water dog Got any pictures of them

I carry a spare "door" only key in a secret pouch in my wallet. I am always locking my keys in my truck. I have only done it once with it running though. The turbo timer has helped a lot with that.

After doing something like this several times, my dad a put a spare key in a magnetic hide-a-key and stuck up under the bed rail. I now do the same. Saved this very headache for me more than a time or two.

Me Toooo

... only when i locked my keys while running it was 4:30 in the am stopped at the gas staion/store to get some OJ and heard the click and went oh dang!!! (actually i cant print what i really said) I ask the guy at the store if I could call my wife... he said sure but tell me what car she is comming in so he can have phone in hand ready to call 911 while hiding under the counter (he knows me and my wife :D )... needless to say after getting my rump chewed on for a few minutes over the phone she showed up laughing at me... so... . I NOW CARRY A SPARE KEY... lesson learned!!!!

Did that before in my old '97. Blew a big white cloud of smoke down the road before the engine got back up to temp. I got out of the truck at a jobsite, don't know how the door got locked, but a kid shut the door and I was ska-rewed.

My new '07 has not locked me out yet but I'm heading to AAA manana for a spare "credit card" wallet key. They caution you about using it in the ignition,but it's perfect for the door. thanks to everyone for the info.

Speaking of keys...

Do the non-remote transponder keys available on ebay for about $15 work in the ignition of the 07 trucks? Or do only the remote-headed keys work?

How about being 50 miles from home with no keys and you realize that you locked the cylinder... . kinda had to start after that huh?

i think everyone has went through this at one time or another. it sux at the time . but we learn a lesson on how to prevent it again. i did it in my 01 a couple times and had a spare key that i hide on the frame. with a bolt and a wing nut and slid a small piece of clear rubber hose over the key to keep dirt and grit off of it.

on mine i have locked the doors and shut the door, if the key is in the ignition the driverside door will unlock on it's own running or not, is this not normal?

Where ever you put it, you want to make sure you can retrieve it without tools.

I do the bolt on the frame and wingnut with stainless steel hardware so it does not get rusted and not be able to be used.

I like the idea of the piece of hose to keep the key clean, thanks.

Oh, do the same for the wife's car too. It happens to both of us.

Same thing happened to me only it was a long side the Interstate. I now have a key I carry and one in the truck I use to drive with. I have not had the problem since.

Velcro.

As far as not letting you lock out when keys in ignition: I think I can only do it with the remote. If I lock it with the button or the plunger, it unlocks itself as the door closes if the key is in the ignition.

I keep my remote on a clip so i can take it off and lock the door with the truck running.

I have done that at a gas station, hit the switch on the door while I was going out. You should have seen me trying to catch the door before it closed, but it was too late. I did something even more stupid, I tried to pry the rear sliding window open (something I was able to do one my 96 Dodge) and of course the window shattered! Thank goodness for comprehensive insurance. After that I went and got a $3 key and leave it in a magnetic box on the frame rail.

I'm sure that most of us did that at one time or another. We just don't want to hear of you locking your keys in your truck with you and your dogs inside. Don
