I was at Lowe's one day and realized I had locked my keys in. Luckily I had a hide a spare (fool me once... :-laf ). As I went around to get it, I heard "OH SH!!" from the next parking line over. A guy with a Chevy P/U went around to the back of his truck. We both reached down to the same place on our respective trucks and grabbed the hide a keys. Pretty funny. The trailer plug box on my 97 was a good spot. Doesn't work on the 06 though.

I changed the title to let people have an idea what this is about. I kept forgetting, and I try to remember there are still guys on dial-up that probaly like to know before they click.

I disabled the key-in chime by cutting the wire that senses the the key, so I need to be careful.

I like the "fool me once" line, but wonder what do you call the fool that KNOWS it will (just a matter of when) happen, but WAITS until it DOES happen before getting an extra key made and hidden someplace. ('cause a fool don't get fooled again :) )

You call that fool AMINK! I didn't get the hide a key the first time (or the second for that matter!) So I guess the "fool me once" would be more accurate if I wrote "Fool me 3 or 4 times, shame on me"! :-laf

Portuguese water dogs

Jeremiah,

Go to hardware store get a key made for a buck or 2, won't start engine but will work on the door. That way this will never happen again, How do you know that one of the dogs didn't hit the door lock button on one of the front doors arm rests

How do you like your dogs I have been wanting a water dog Got any pictures of them

Do I have any pictures of them? How many do you want? PM me and I'll send you some. I can also refer you to someone who has PWD calendars for sale.

Good idea on the cheap key. Steve St. Laurent also suggested a thin knife to open up the slider. I didn't think of that either.

Keystone kops

This is as good a time as any to relate another incident that happened to a fellow police officer in Shreveport many years ago. The officer was driving a paddy wagon (coulda been a Dodge for all I know) on the evening shift and had picked up a few of prisoners from other units. He was on the way back to the the station when two of the prisoners began fighting. At the next red light the officer, who wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, went back and jumped in the back of the paddy wagon to talk to the offending prisoners by hand, if you know what I mean. A gust of wind blew the door of the paddy wagon closed, locking the officer up with his prisoners.

A bit later the dispatcher got a call from a passer-by. "You better get somebody out there to help that officer," he said. "He's in trouble!"

Turns out there was a unit nearby and he arrived in time to let the policeman out before the other prisoners hurt him too bad.

Later that night, as the shift officers were getting off duty, the paddy wagon driver began demonstrating what happened. He jumped into the back of his converted panel van and went through the motions from several hours before.

"And this is when the wind blew the door shut," he said.

"You mean like this?" said one of the other officers, slamming the door shut. Everyone laughed, got in their own vehicles to go home, and left the hapless officer locked in his paddy wagon one more time. I don't remember how he got out that time. Oo.

I'm sure that most of you know this but just an FYI to all of you, if the truck has power locks, it should not allow the drivers door to lock while the key is in the ignition.

What happens though is most people have a few keys, a key fob, maybe some other junk hanging along with the ignition key and it will pull the key out of the ignition lock cylinder JUST enough that it won't engage the "don't lock drivers door" feature.

I always keep a spare key on my vehicles just in case the keys get locked in. It happens to even the most careful of us. It has happened to me while at work. Pull into the parking lot, turn off the vehicle. Fiddle with something in the console or glove box. Get out of truck, lock doors, shut door, go into the office. 5:00 comes around, walk out to the parking lot, go to grab for keys, go to grab for keys, grab for keys a final time, think to myself "holy crap, how did I lose my keys?" Realize I was a victim of a dumb***** attack and locked them in my truck. Without a spare on the outside of the truck, I would have had to make that embarrassing call to my wife! Saved me from ever having to bring it up. Now I can still make fun of her when she does it!

When I bought my 02 I had the dealer install keyless entry. I don't know if they installed it wrong or what, but that thing locked me out more times than I can remember. I'm a slow learner, but I finally got a hide a key. It still locks, for no good reason, whenever it wants to.

The solution

Thanks to all who responded. After a visit to my friendly lock shop I now have a spare credit card key hidden in my wallet. This should never happen to me again.

Unless, of course, I go out without my wallet, in which case I would deserve to be locked out. Locked up too.

Lost key while at work

Not unlike most of these stories, I have locked keys inside b4 but the story I want to pass on is the time that I lost my key ring with all my keys while at work. I was fortunate enough to get a coworker to drive me to the closest Dealer and was very surprised and happy to find that they were not only able to cut me a new key but they did it for FREE Oo. Someone did find my key ring and returned it the next day but if I would have had that hidden key, it would have saved some time and embarrassment.
