2 morons from my Alma Mater... ... Idiots

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two college students arrested Wednesday in a string of nine rural Alabama church arsons told authorities that the first fires were set as “a joke” and later blazes were intended as a diversion, federal agents said.

A third college student was arrested later Wednesday in the serial arsons, according to WVTM-TV of Birmingham.

Benjamin Nathan Moseley and Russell Lee Debusk Jr. , both students at Birmingham-Southern College, appeared in federal court Wednesday and were ordered held on church arson charges pending a hearing Friday.

Matthew Lee Cloyd, reportedly a student at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, was arrested midday, the WVTM reported.

An ATF affidavit said Moseley told agents on Wednesday that he, Cloyd and Debusk went to Bibb County in Cloyd’s Toyota sport utility vehicle on Feb. 2 and set fire to five churches. A witness quoted Cloyd as saying Moseley did it “as a joke and it got out of hand,” according to the affidavit.

Moseley also told agents the four church fires in west Alabama were set “as a diversion to throw investigators off,” an attempt that “obviously did not work,” the affidavit said.

Arson investigators scheduled an afternoon news conference at the Tuscaloosa airport to discuss the arrests.

The first two suspects were arrested Tuesday night, NBC’s Pete Williams reported.

WVTM-TV, citing the state fire marshal’s office, said the two are students at Birmingham Southern College and were arrested at a college dorm.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives made the Alabama church arson case a top priority as scores of agents joined state and local law officers in the probe.

Authorities analyzed tire tracks and traced the purchase of the tires to Cloyd.

‘We are relieved’

The pastor at one of the destroyed churches said he was told of the arrests by investigators.

“We are relieved. We were fearful while they were on the loose because we did not know their agenda,” said Jim Parker, pastor of the Ashby Baptist Church in Brierfield, which was burned to the ground.

Ten Baptist churches in rural parts of the state were burned by arsonists last month. Nine of the fires — five on Feb. 3 in Bibb County and four on Feb. 7 in west Alabama — have been linked. Another church fire on Feb. 11 in Lamar County has been ruled arson, but investigators have not determined if it is connected to the others.

The ATF has scheduled a mid-day press conference to discuss the case.

No racial pattern

There was no racial pattern — five of the churches had white congregations and five black. All were Baptist, the dominant faith in the region, and mostly in isolated country settings.

A federal source said the apparent motive was that the three students just liked to set and watch fires.

Five of the churches were destroyed and four were damaged, including one in which congregants, alerted during the night that churches were afire, arrived just as the apparent arsonists were leaving. That fire, quickly put out, had been set in the sanctuary near the altar — a pattern in the other church arsons in Bibb County and west Alabama.

I'm trying to think of the logic of this - aren't there things much more fun to set on fire than churches? If it's thrills and fire you're seeking, why not closed gas stations? Or maybe liquor stores? You're risking somebody being inside there and getting cooked - or worse (from the arsonist's point of view) a bunch of angry parishioners waiting around for you after you burnt the first few churches. I just don't understand what it is about churches that would provide a particular fire thrill. BTW, though I do enjoy watching a good fire and I did make quite a few incendiary devices as a kid, I do NOT set things on fire for fun.

WTF?? How about nothing at all. you want to watch a fire sit around the campsite.

If they had torched abortion clinics instead of churches, there would have been a national outcry by the main media.

Rubberneck - why do you think I'm a Scout leader? So I can set and watch the campfires. But if there's a news story about a big fire, I'll watch it. I'm not in any way suggesting that anyone set fire to gas stations, just trying to find the logic in setting fire to churches INSTEAD of gas stations.

The last spate of church burnings gaining national attention was situated in Alabama and was found to be 'fueled' by racial animosity. These idiots thought they'd get in the news more quickly if churches were torched. One has to be demented to understand why; I am and do.

I guess my dementia doesn't go that far - if I were setting things on fire I'd want to keep the media and police and interested parishioners away for as long as possible - A) I'd get to watch the pretty flames longer and B) I'd get away to go light other fires. Extra notoriety doesn't seem like it would be an arsonist's friend. Oh, well, hopefully they'll have a nice long prison stay to think about their mistakes.

Here is what I hear from some folks at the college. The Boys apparently spent many nights "night hunting" and spotlighting in the area before they grew bored and decided to burn Churches... . What in the hell would posess someone to do such a thing? The first 5 were all white churches, so race is not the motive, so what could it be?

Night hunting:

LeCroy said the trio may face state charges because they admitted to night hunting, which included shooting a cow on Feb. 3. The three could also face additional federal charges.

LeCroy said night hunting near some of the churches started to increase around Christmas.

"It seemed like it shifted into high gear," he said. "It wasn't just one group - there were several groups doing it. "

Sometime in late fall, a cow was shot to death. Then, on the night of the first set of fires, a second cow was shot. LeCroy said he had to examine the dead cow but wasn't able to recover a bullet.

Shooting livestock was one of the clues that people from outside the area were involved, Lecroy said. "Most of the old time redneck hunters are just out to get them a deer. They don't usually bother the livestock. "

LeCroy said there may be some outlaws among the locals, "but they were brought up not to mess with churches. Their grandma would whip them. " News Washington correspondent Mary Orndorff contributed to this report. -- email address removed --

Most of the guys I went to school wouldn't consider night hunting for the same reason... .

What, they were shooting livestock in addition to buring churches and endangering human lives? They're really in trouble now. I suppose the animal rights groups will be all over this now.
