thin black oil after 500 miles

Changed the oil Sunday, noticed it was very thin and black. new filter too.



Checked it last night, 500 miles later. Very thin and black. Volume looked to be same as it checked right after filling nad letting it sit. I don't notice any burning oil etc. , but have noticed what I think is a lot of tailpipe smoke from time to time.



Should it look that bad that quick?

Mine looks the same have 4800 miles on it looks dirty all the time. Also foot is in it all the time more fuel more soot dirtier oil. I still change every 3000 miles no matter what it looks like. cheap insurance on a 7000 some odd dollar motor. P. S. i have no cat converter on my 05 with EZ box , Green cold air Kit, AFE torque tube and 5" magnaflow exhaust and it covers the back half of my truck with soot. normal

It's normal for diesel oil to look like that. High compression = blowby. It doesn't mean your oil is bad. The black appearance is from the same soot that accumulates in your tail pipe.

engine hot or cold? type of oil in the sump? hot oil can run like water...

Everyone including the dealer says its normal to me also. . My 04 305/555 was always cleans as the day I put it in for the 15k that I owned it. The 04. 5 and all that Ive seeen have been black in 10 seconds after a change. . Kinda makes you wonder what Cummins did with the 325/600 motor

We were discussing this regarding the rokktech crankshaft sensor. I brought up the notion that the late in the power stroke 3rd injector pulse for emissions purposes might be causing soot to get into the oil. It's just a guess but the timing of this theory makes sense.



Also -- I'm slowly inching towards running B95 biodiesel. It will be interesting to see what a practically sulfer free fuel combined with the 2 degree advancement of the timing will reveal after my next oil change.
