Is this part of the conspiracy against us dieselheads?

Interesting 96 on E-bay

Those of you with plugged up intakes, why aren't you decommissioning the EGR system?

I have one here at the shop that I am putting twin chargers on and will see if I can take some GOOD pics of what the intake looks like with EGR.

tdi intake problem

Hey fellas, the cure for the intake problem is the Mann-Hummel Pro-Vent 200 and it works. It takes the oil vapor out of the breather air back to the intake. Very quality unit and expect to pay 160. 00 for the unit. It has a filter in it and extract the oil in a vortex fasion with a drain tube on it. This is a must conversion, in my book! Tim

I was considering one of these a few months back- waited too long. Since Katrina the prices on TDI's are through the roof. You'd never break even at today's gas & diesel prices.

I've talked to several owners and gotten nothing but good reports, so maybe I'll take another look after supply catches up with the demand. If it ever does again.

Gary

Tim where do you get the pro vent 200? I have a 2001 beetle and it has been a very good vehicle averaging 46 mpg on daily driving.

I have had my 05 for a little less then a year now and it has almost 50k miles on it. I change the oil using a pela 6000 pump. I drive it between 70mph and 80mph 5 days a week 50 miles one way and get 49mpg hand caculated. Yes, it is a 5 speed. Torque is 177lbs stock and that is all you really need. Under hard acceleration it puts out a good "haze" of smoke. I love it. I'm going to let my wife start driving it and I'll drive the 93 D250 to work.

Hey bud, if you will go to freds tdi .com and click on parts, you will find a few outlets for these. I got this one from Halsey Imports in Portland, Oregon. I made my manifold out of copper tube, however you can use 3/4 in. fuel line. Works great, well worth the money!

There are guys doing it for offroad racing. Instructions can be found on tdiclub.com if you look around.

Interested to see how the twin turbos will work on the tdi.

Mark at Piers Diesel Research (www.piersdiesel.com) has vast knowledge of making power on the TDI (injectors, turbo, etc. ,). Piers also happen to sell injectors, turbos, etc. , for the TDI.

disclaimer: not affliated with any vendor.

I tried to buy one here and no dice

They won't discount one here one penny and not nice people I have found. So I bought a chevy cobalt. I wanted a VW diesel but can't deal with them. They want full sticker so I walked. :{

Gary, I have a 2001 Jetta TDI with 190,000 miles, You wont have trouble with the injector pump. For the engine I have only had to do routine maintainance with the exception of cleaning the inter cooler and intake manifold. The tdi uses exhaust gas recirculation. If you are purchasing a new vehicle I would recommend right after purchase you reset a parameter in the ECM which will set the EGR valve to it minimum setting once this is done. You will not have any more trouble. I do not like changing the timing belt every 60,000 miles right now I am running a 80,000 mile belt. I have a five speed just had the clutch replaced the actual clutch and pressure plate were fine but they use a dual mass fly wheel and the fly wheel failed. Over all though an excellent vehicle. This summer I started producing my own bio diesel and it works great on B100.

I love the idea of a TDI, but it fails in execution.

VW has had TERRIBLE quality control with their electrical systems in past years.

The TDI is a finicky engine, that wants special 505. 11 or whatever oil and is wrapped in a car that will plague you with electrical problems.

I love diesels, but for a compact economy car, I'd be looking for a little Toyota or Honda gasser for sure... They are built like jewels.

Whoa! twins will be a neat trick, where you gonna put them? Not much room in there. Definitely would like to see pictures. I'm sure the crowd on TDICLUB.com would definitely like to see the project in progress...

What do you hope to gain from twins vs a single GT-20 or vnt-17 turbo, for instance? Guys in Europe are putting down deep into the 200's hp-wise with a single Gt-20 or -22 turbo, or a vnt-20. How are you going to keep the ECU happy? There's a 3-bar MAP sensor that can get you to 29 psi with proper reflash, stock one is limited to 22 psi.

Power is ultimately limited by timing. 24 degrees crank (12 degrees cam) is all she'll give ya.

What injectors... ? ;)

Hohn, You shouldn't slam one until you own one. :) I have had issues with the Beetles electrical but the Jetta so far has been flawless.

The TDI is a good motor and I think the oil is to make the turbo last longer. It seems you can only get 100K out of them.

The German engineering shines in a lot of areas including ride and handling.

Kerma, it's good to see you on here. When are we going to do a get together for the locals?

Hey Bennett, the belt that is supposed to go 80,000 miles is actually a 60,000 mile belt, just longer change interval. Crazy, hun? But true. I use Lucas top end fuel additve in fuel, it's like 10wt oil. When I changed the belt and tensioner, I also put the new water pump in, its behind the timing belt. Didn't have to do a vag-com as I didn't change any perameters of the timing. One word of caution for anyone who does their belt, the tensioner must, must tightnen clockwise towards the top of the engine, not swing in from the bottom. Instant spring unwind in the tensioner to the tune of 40. 00. Dont ask how I know this, Alright, I hadn't recieved my Bently Service Manual yet and got in a hurry. All my mistakes cost something, it seems. Its not a bad job to do though. Tim

Tim, are we talking about the turbo or the belt? The turbo I am told is only worth about 100K miles but I have 130K on the Beetle. I am probably going to change it out in the spring with a modified version.

I purchased the Jetta with 60K and had the owner throw in a belt change. I found out later that the '02 has the 80K service.

I add the Lucas fuel additive in the fuel and seem to get an extra 2mpg and the motor runs smoother. I mainly do it to protect the pump and injectors.

You just missed one last week!! Rocketchip was here at my place and we tuned a bunch of cars. Good time. We are working on a wrenching GTG soon in Heber. You should check the mountain/SW regional forum on TDIclub for details.

No pictures until its all said and done. Sorry... ..... Except for the intake pics that I forgot about.

There is plenty of room for two turbos. The pump, lines and injectors are all being changed. Intercooler, cam, ported and polished/flowed head and more. I still have some more research to do on timing. The goal is a mild 225 to 250 ish. I hope to be able to eliminate the MAP sensor.

Injectors?? We have some from a Kerma TDI guy!! :-laf

J. R.

Bennett, we are referring to the belt change interval on the 96 being 60,000 miles, however they say with the new belt it can go 80,000, with the same part numbered belt. I don't have anything on the turbo life. Clean oil, cool down time, and cool air will always help!!! Tim

The g/f and I will be picking up a TDI soon.

I WAS looking at a two door golf, but the 6-speed Jetta doesn't seem too bad.

How are the Pumpe Duse motors? I am hearing mixed reviews.

Is there a "golden year" for the VW's, like the Dodge '98 QC 12V's ?

Thanks,

Merrick

What ever you do don't buy a new TDI Ebay and the Trader and everything under the sun is flooded with 05. 5 to 06 cars with 10-40 k on them.
