I like the G56 just fine but I can't tell you how many times I would be going down the road and absent mindedly shift out of 6th looking for something higher.

Me too. Really it feels like 5 and 6 are just spaced too close together. Others have stated that gearing throughout is lower, but to me it feels like only 6th is lower.

Oo. I have an '05' 3500 srw lb 4x4, 5600 six speed, and love it , tows great, and is very fun empty,I think the 3500 actually rides better empty than my '03' 2500 sb 4x4, this is my third cummins and swear by them, first was a '90'w-250 5 speed which recently just sold,,was hooked on them after the first ten minutes driving in the first one,,,

I love all three of my 3rd gen trucks. all have great power and both transmissions do a great job. I do prefer the NV5600 ,but the G56 in my new Megacab and new Quad cab seem to do just fine.

My '05 with the g56 works well, and I have abused it since I was the "test dummy" for south bend's dual disk clutch conversion. Held up real well to a 4wd 3rd gear 20+/- psi launch on dry pavement. I may do it again and post a video of it just to kill the "Plastic Gear" crap.

G56 works great! I drove a friends 05 3500 DRW nv5600 first and then bought my own. I didn't want a dually so I went with the SRW. I didn't know, besides a different shift pattern, that the trannys were different until after the purchase. After a couple thousand miles, most of which are towing our Airstream, then driving his truck again, I actually prefer my G56. More positive shifting, smoother not so notchy, better shift pattern(not worried about hitting reverse when looking for 5th, and while towing I like the gearing better in 6th. Less downshifting.

I guarantee you'll love the G56 6 speed!

JFAULKNER,

I'd love to see that video!!! If you do it, post it to this thread, so I'll be notified when you upload it.

Love my NV 5600 6-speed. Hope the G56 is somewhat similar. However, you're buying a TRUCK. Mine drives like a truck--a tractor-trailer. In the first 4 gears I'm rowing but with little going. If Dodge offered a transfer case I'd have to trade. Also, you know you're moving a lot of metal when you shift. Once I hit 5th I scoot. I love entering an interstate in 5th and winding it out then hitting 6th--that sucker moves! And I'm all stock. Driving a standard transmission is a science--gives you something to think about while you drive :-laf

G56 OD Gear ratio

I have heard that the G56 has less of an overdrive ratio than the NV5600. Does anybody know what the od ratio in the G56 is? If it is a smaller ratio maybe they should bring back 3. 54 gears. My brother's '01 seems to tow just fine with 3. 54's but gets excellent milage to boot. I've heard that the '06's are harder on fuel.

I love my 05 so much so that i just ordered an 06 megacab laramie. Drove the Stick and the auto and felt the stick was geared very low for everyday driving when towing isnt our prime motivation so i opted for the auto 48re's rule ;)

I've got an '06 6speed - see signature. Agree with the input regarding the lower overdrive, however when it comes to towing it is "scary" powerful and controllable. The new HD 2500 now has a 9000 gvw rating. Not sure if it makes too much difference. Riding empty on I-25 north of Denver you can feel it (course on that stretch of interstate you'd feel it in a Caddy). Definitely has "go". I've got 3400+ miles on it. There is a thread running about fuel consumption. Just filled up today and hand calc'd at 17. 49 mpg (Trip Comp showed 14. 9) - I'm happy. Towing our 10K Dump trailer (which is usually overloaded - did I say that?), the Trip Comp. indicates around 13. Am running the white jug Diesel Service additive. Just put in an AFE drop in air filter with 28 miles on this tank. Will post mileage after next fill. In my opinion, if this is a work truck or a puller, you won't go wrong and won't be disappointed. Here in the Mountain states where it is still legal to drive 75 it works just fine. One question that seems to come up regularly is what RPM is the 6 speed running at 75 mph? My answer 2350.

Scott.

Has anyone noticed a lot of gear backlash in 4th and 5th on the '06 G56's? I test drove two of them last week and the clunk in the transmission when releasing the clutch was really scarry.
