I'm not new to Dodge and Cummins(had a'93 still have a '94 and'96)and I'm not new to the TDR. Last nite I went and looked at a used '98 24v. I know most of the quirks on the older trucks, but nothing about the newer motor. What kind of problems are some of you guys having?

Blackcloud, I can't tell you about any problems that I've had with my 2 24v's because I haven't had any motor problems. They all have quirks you just have to discover them. Pete

I have not had any trouble with the engine, but it does not drive like a 12v. I would try to get the dealer to let me drive it for a couple of days. You may even be able to rent it. I am over in Racine. You can drive mine to see how it compares to the one you are looking at if you want.

tlippy-what kind of problems did the pump have/shouldn't it be covered under the engine warranty?
LSMITH-the truck actually is in Racine(I'm in Burlington)and I did give it a short test drive. It is almost the same as your truck except for 8' box. I was impressed on how smooth it was compared to the 2 trucks I have now.

No problems at all,a little over 16,000 miles in just 7 months. I like to drive it,as you can tell.

Blackcloud,

Like you I am a 12V owner and have been wanting to get a new truck. So I too have been reading the 24V forum for several months. From what I've gathered, like mentioned before, some of the early 24V trucks had problems with the VP44 pump. Seems to me there was problems with "stumble", low power/mileage. Has been several ECM reflashes to address these problems (don't know if they are completly solved yet. Don't hear any complaints from the ETH owners). Another common problem I have noticed is weak lift pumps and/or failures which can cause the VP44 pump to go also. These are the major ones that stick in my head.

You might want the check out Fritz's web site and go thru the extensive TSB listings. This may help give you a better idea of some of the problems with the early 24V trucks.

Cloud - I would get a 99'. There were some problems with a few of the early 98's. The Vp44's in about a third of the early 24 valves had problems.

Blackcloud, my buddy had a '98 24V that he used for hauling livestock. He put 90,000 miles on the truck in 2 1/2 years. He had problems with the fuel line leaking (there was a recall on it). The recall was performed, but he still had some minor problems with other fuel line leaks. At 88,000 the VP44 took a dump. I don't think he ever used a fuel additive. All the problems were repaired under warranty. This truck was worked pretty hard and got good fuel economy. I think this truck might be at the dealer in Union Grove on the used truck lot (I'm in Kenosha).

blackcloud , things that come to mind , brake pull , steering wander and faulty lift and injection pumps , have the dealer pull up the warranty repirs and see whats been done to it . if it hasn't had an injection pump it will probably need one , don't put a box on it that cuts the wire , ie blue box , PE , powermax , when the pump goes ... if it goes ... you'll be paying for it .

i would either get a 98 12V or get a 2001 24V if i was doing it over.

8 months - 28,500 miles. No Problems! Average 18. 5 mpg for the first 6 1/2 months, since it got cold mileadge dropped as low as 15. 5 for a couple fills when it was routinely -20, back into the mid 16's in January. Last night filled and it was 18 again. I'm usually running empty, but don't own a trailer that will slow it down. Ray

Glenn,if it was me I'd stick to a 12 valve, not as many problems, easier to work on yourself and the main reason, better fuel economy. See if you can find one with low miles. Met a fellow in a restaurant parking lot last week with a '96 he had just bought,27k on it,so they are out there.

If its a 98 check closely on the re-flashes. If it had the emissions re-flash ( I don't recall the number), don't even consider buying it. #ad

Blackcloud, just a note from the lighter side. My 98 was built third week of Jan 98 making it one of the ones with the potential for a bad VP44. 92,000 miles so far without a problem (even with a PM2, VA, and 275 injectors). Also no brake or steering problems. Guess I got lucky. Also, 16mpg in town and 19mpg on the highway weighing almost 9000 lbs.

I'll throw in with Jeff Clark here! 98. 5 with 105,000 miles, no fuel pump, lift pump, brake pull, steering wander, engine stumble or any of the other problems mentioned. I had the smog reflash done when the TSB was issued. I average 17-19 mpg in town and 21-22 on the highway. This is my first CTD so I can't compare it to the 12v. If one person posts a problem on these forums then everyone is quick to say they are all bad. My opinion is there is still thousands out there on the road everyday doing thier job. If my history is any indication..... I say go for it!

Blackcloud,
I have a '01 2500 with the new HO motor and almost 8k miles and no problems (knock on wood)
I like the newer trucks. I get good mileage even on this low odometer reading, last night got 18. 2 MPg with some street and some highway Empty of corse. #ad
