ABS on a Harley-Davidson???

Identify This Old Car, 1950's ?

Don't get one newer than 2008. Google "VW High Pressure Fuel Pump" and you'll know why.

And then you can read my sob story in the other VW TDi thread...

They fixed that part just bought a 2012 TDI wagen awesome car

I hope it's still awesome when you have 42,000 miles in it. I wish you the best of luck.

Does that mean the replacement pump VW is putting in my car will be the new updated part? I sure as hell hope so.

I have a question for you on your Jetta TDI Wagon. At what point do you fill up the tank, IE: 1/2 full, 1/4 full or do you wait for the low fuel waring to chime?

I am trying to see at what percentage of users have failed the fuel pump by filling-up when the low fuel waring is activated. I have instructed my wife to never let the tank go below 1/4 full and to fill up at this point. So far she has done this faithfully.

She and a girl friend our in the land of cheese curds right now, they went up to the door staying in Fish Creek. only took 6 gallons to drive from Oswego to Sturgeon Bay, WI. That would have been 24 gallons with the truck and camper.

Hey Jim from what I have read they have a new pump try TDI.com or even jetta junky.com as for fuel I am going to do the same as the truck Never below a 1/4 tank period hope you have better luck with the new pump . This is our first tdi but I have been around air cooled vw's for yr's so it's all new but I have done alot of reading before we bought .

I've always driven on the top half of the tank of all my cars for a lot of reasons. And I tell my wife to do the same. But for her, there is an additional reason. If I tell her to fill up at half a tank, I know she will at least fill it up before it gets to a quarter tank. If I were to tell her to be sure to fill up when it gets down to a quarter tank, it would quite often be almost empty when she fills up. So, with the half tank rule, I'm (hopefully) saving the car from excess "bottom of the tank" crap clogging up the filter, and saving the AAA roadside "out of gas" calls for when we really need it. :)

Also with the new car's the fuel cool's the intank pump so after learning the hard way we now fill at 1/4 tank or as close as possible replacing the pump is very costly .

My wife normally fills it once it gets to 1/4 tank. I don't let my truck get below 1/3. I was schooled up years ago on the mechanical risks associated with letting a diesel run out of gas, let alone any fuel injected vehicle which uses a high pressure pump.

Our car has been meticulously maintained--even oil changes have been done at the VW dealer. We've always been careful of where we get fuel.

I see that they have a new pump in the 2012s, but do older models being fixed under warranty also get it? Can't seem to find anything that confirms or denies.

I would have to do some more reading on the jetta sites but I believe that the new pump should be the new style here is a picture of the new 1 on it's way home from vegas the other day

Very nice. :) I hope your Jetta treats you good. Please keep us posted as you pile on the miles.

I sure hope it's a good car and we will see how it goes but it's got just a hair over 500 miles on it already and we started with 64 so not bad and to boot I fit in the silly thing .

so now it saves on miles on my truck YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

An update... just picked the car up from VW and everything was 100% covered under the warranty no questions asked. They paid for a rental car for 10 days and are reimbursing me for towing. They even threw in a free oil change! With a smile!

He told me they installed an updated Bosch high pressure fuel pump design which is better engineered to handle U. S. ULSD that has a lower lubricity than does European ULSD. The entire fuel system, from tank to injectors and EVERYTHING in between, was replaced.

He also told me that every HPFP replacement his dealership performed was fully warranted by VW regardless of how much gasoline they found in the diesel fuel. All 3 cases at this dealership (including mine) had traces of gasoline in the diesel. This was 3 cases out of several hundred VW TDIs they've sold since 2009. Regardless (even in one case--not mine--where a wife put gas in the diesel tank by mistake), VW made the $7800 repair (their cost) under warranty.

Word of wisdom to VW TDI owners; BE DAMN CAREFUL WHERE YOU REFUEL! Sometimes mistakes are made by fuel delivery trucks and diesel fuel tanks can become adulterated with trace amounts of gasoline. My wife filled up her diesel tank at Murphy Oil (Walmart) 180 miles before the HPFP grenaded. From now on, if it doesn't say BP, Exxon, Mobil, Shell, Marathon, Phillips 66, or Shell on the pump, it WILL NOT be pumped into this car!

Our trusty Cummins also have HPFPs too (as does any common rail diesel)... so the advice applies there too.

Although I still fault Volkswagen for putting a weak part on the market that isn't robust enough to withstand diesel in the U. S. market, I applaud them for graciously standing behind their product! When it runs, this is an absolutely delightful car!

Simplysmn: enjoy your new Jetta with no regrets. Keep up with maintenance and get it all done at the VW dealer. Although you may experience a glitch or two, at least you can drive with the peace of mind knowing that VW will stand behind their products.

VWoA redeemed themselves to me by standing behind their product; I'll give VW and my Jetta SW TDI another chance. :)

I'm glad they took care of you I did alot of research before buying the car and felt good about it just yesterday we got 45 mpg n better while driving it I love this little thing and yes VW will be doing all work on it till the day we trade it off but hope that will be several yr's from now with many happy Miles .

Will the new VW TDI's run on biodiesel? 100%? Or <? Or not al all?

I believe that VW has the same restriction as Cummins has on Bio-Fuel. That is 5% max. I have run some bio-fuel up to B20, only when we had no choice and need to fuel the truck or the Jetta. I normally if permitted search out non-bio station since I do not want any issues with the fuel system.

Part of the reason why VW and Cummins will restrict the Bio-Fuel is due to the emission equipment. Bio will not burn hot enough to burn off the soot trapped in the DPF, when cleaning is required.

VW and the dealership took full responsibility and repaired everything at their cost. Why would you recommend filing a complaint with a stupid, heavy-handed, bureaucratic government regulatory agency who can only make a situation worse?
