Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fastest 6 speed?

I'm not really in search of more power. My 1. 5's with the "box" turned up, probably use all the fuel my HO VP44 has to squirt. Oo. The thing is the Blue Chip box comes on like an afterburner! Now from what I've been reading, the Mach 4's have good low speed manners & folks are reporting respectable milage too. That leads me to believe they would smooth out my power delivery. I'd like to hear from some one who's running them with an electronic cruise control. Do they hold a speed with out to much surging?

I have the electronic CC and no surging problems. They are actually quite smooth.

If you get surging, it's from the ECM, not the M4s.

The longer I have the m4s, the more convinced I become that they are a truly streetable year-round daily driver injector.

Your HO has enough fuel to make power with the M4s and the box turned up.

Thanks Justin. I'm about convinced to spring for a new set. I know I recently read a post from Don M. on NWB where he said Mach 4. 5's use all that the HO injector pump has to offer.

what about a set of 8 hole injectors like haisley's. i plan on geting a set of 8x13's. or maybe a set of 7 hole injectors. i'd call patty and talk to her. any 7 hole = $700 vs. mach 4's $800.

I don't know much about the Haisley's, but I do know some folks around here like them. I do know Don's work though. I've been running an early set of his "improved angle" 1. 5's for a year now. They blew my socks off when I first ran them. I was sure he'd set me 2's by mistake.

I'm considering Don's suggestion of a custom set just about 10 hp under the 4's specifically to cool it off for better towing. I guess we could call them Mach 3. 95's. :-laf

darkhorse,

I would go with Don's suggestion of the slightly smaller Mach 4. I have set up several guys trucks similiar to yours and all were very happy with the results!

Bingo! Don has a set he just finished. He's calling them Mach 3. 8's. I'm placing my order. Oo.

Mach 3.8's

The new custom 3. 8's went in this afternoon. They sure are nice! Good low speed manners & easy to control smoke. Lots more power!!! I don't think I'll be using my fueling box much with these new sticks.

IIRC, these are sticks that Don has optimized JUST for the HO vp44. They should give great performance and cleanliness.

I'm so happy w/ my 4s that I don't feel the need to test or try anything else.

I believe that's correct. I've only put about 25 miles on them so far. I'm having no trouble doing the slow speed roll over the dirt rut thing. It does take a light touch but smoke is very controllable. The power is amazing & it comes on much smoother than the box. Boost rises right up to the mid 30's real quick. I was seeing 1200* climbing a steep grade at 90 mph. Gotta watch that stuff. It's also fairly easy to get a little bark out of the turbo backing out to fast. I also tried one little blast with the box turned up. I was trailing gray smoke & things were happening noticeably faster. :D I can keep the box for bragging rights, but seriously, I don't think I'll see much need for that much go power. :-laf

Congrats on the new sticks. Sounds like a great set up. I was thinking of doing the same. How would these new injectors work towing max gross weight at 95* and 10k feet at 7% grade?

It gets pretty hot down here and altitude and hills are not hard to come by.

ESorensen,

The Mach 4's will be too much unless you upgrade your turbo setup for towing like you want... ... !. 6's are about as perfect as they come for towing hot, heavy, and at higher altitudes with a stock turbo. Now if you upgrade your turbo you could go with bigger injectors but the 4's may still be too much for where you live.

Strangely enough, these new 3. 8's are running cooler by about 50* for any given speed than my previous 1. 5's.

DH,

Could my stock HX take these 3. 8's with signature mods? I only tow 10% of the time.

Would my stock clutch hold?

I would have to clairfy that I as of yet do not have anything to tow that heavy. However I bought the truck to tow in the future. I understand that a turbo would be in order for this application. Maybe twins using the stock turbo in conjunction with something larger. As for the clutch, it is one of those things that is more easily pushed past the wife.

ESorensen,

Yup with a good turbo upgrade you could run the mach 4's without any problem as long as you watch your egts while towing.

Doug

I'm sure Doug is right. With a CaTCHER you are close to the limit of your clutch now. You could probably get by with your stock HX 35 but you would need to keep a close watch on your EGT's. You also need to limit your stock HX to 35 psi of boost. My SB con ofe is seems to be holding up very well to my fueling level even with the box turned up.
