Thinking about rv'ing

We are full time RVers known as fulltimers, we started with a TT and moved up to the 5iver. If you want to know what your truck will pull and how well, this is the right place to be, if you want to learn about Rving then you need to check out the many sites that deal with rving such as rv.net. Travel Trailers are nice in many ways, but I do not believe there is a travel trailer build today including the best hitch set up, that is as safe as the 5iver for towing. If all you are going to do is weekends and camping out close to home you have more options then if you plan to spend full time on the road. We have just completed a cross county trip, some of it in bad weather, sure glad I was not pulling a travel trailer.

I'm 6' , since you and your better half are both tall folks, ( and since you own a cummins), don't look at the "lite" trailers. All that we looked were shorter inside than a normal size TT and 5'ver. The lite versions were really meant for the SUV's that can't really tow a good fullsize trailer. Many of the lite versions are very very nice looking - great interiors and exteriors. But the height and width were sacrifised on all of the ones we looked at.

Alot of great advice there- it was said you would get many opinions, and you will. There are pros & cons to every type of RV, but in the end, all are much fun.

We have met some really great people, and had much fun camping over the years.

If time is on your side, try and go to an RV show. Just go to look at all the different units, without the thought of purchasing. Thats what we did and after finding 2 or 3 that we liked- we went and did some homework and talked to some owners, then decided. I wish you luck.



So, anyway, I just finished replacing the hot water element that was turned "on" with a drained tank ( I'll blame the 4 year old on that one), but yeah, I should checked before plugging in. The CTD is all ready and waxed, firewood is loaded, bearings greased, tires pumped, and cabinets full of food I shouldnt eat. We are heading to Mass this week for the first trip of the year, and I am psyched. See y'all out there--

Started with a tent, then two different TT's graduated to a 5th wheel, sold it and bought a bigger one w/slide (which is FOR SALE) because we just bought our 3rd 5th Wheel, a 29' Alpenlite.



A few things I like with a 5th wheel over a TT are: 5th wheels are much easier to hook-up and un-hook as well as easier to level. Towing a 5vr is a dream compared to a TT, NO SWAY like you get with a TT, even with an anti-sway bar. 5vr gives you less total tow length because it overhangs into the P/U bed. 5vr you can turn sharper and easier to park and finally, it is much nicer/privacy wise with the bedroom elevated rather than being all the same level... you can actually leave the shades open without someone being able to look in and it is much harder for someone to reach the bedroom windows/screens if open, if trying to break in. Food for thought.



Anyway - Welcome to RV'ing, we started with an RV when our daughter was 6 months old, she is now 20 and still likes to go camping with us. Because of RV'ing is the reason we became obsessed with the CTD . Good luck and enjoy.

My biggest regret about RVing was not getting a pop-up camper when our kids were young enough to enjoy it with us. At the time, a nice Coleman pop-up was about $4000, but we didn't feel we could spend that much. We did some tent camping, but quit doing that when my interests went other places. I didn't get my 1st RV till my kids were out of the house. Now it's too late. I enjoy our 5th wheel a lot, but w/o the kids.

Go for a newer fifth wheel and you won't be disappointed. There are some that are set up for families vs. retirees. My kids both have rear bunkhouse models and it works just fine for the grandkids. Airstreams are beautiful to look at and I don't know much about the new ones but they remind me of classic cars.
