I now have a 94 12v and I might buy my Mom's truck 01 24v 5 spd.

What are the highs and lows of this motor?

I never get to drive it so I dont know how it runs or much about the truck in general.

Is there anything I should look at before I buy it?

I have heard of the Edge kits and they seem to run good with them.

I know my 12v with the #5 plate can walk all over the 24v but thats just logic. lol

Would this 24v run the same and get the milage with a Edge or other chip?

I dont wanna give up my 12v milage and power but I want the newer rig.

I think the question is why are you looking to get out of your truck?

The 12v get better mileage. The 24vs have more horsepower. The 24v are cheap and easy to uprate. The 12vers are more reliable.

I get better milage with the newer truck. It's faster now just by adding a used EZ and some ebay 275 injectors. It pulls like a frieghttrain and goes NOW when I get on it while our 12 valve runs like an old city bus. The new one is a bunch nicer inside with the leather and better power seat. I hadn't thought it would matter to me much but I've gotten hooked on the quadcab rear doors. They really make the back of the cab a lot easier to use. The rear discs make a big difference in stopping - especially when heavy.

When I first test drove a new Diesel Ram in 1996, it was a Red 12V 3500 extra-cab and it rocked! However, by the time that I could finally afford a Ram diesel, (for which I stupidly sold my perfectly running '96 5. 2L gas 5 speed Ram to get) it was for my present Y2K 3500 24V. The milage and power of my new Ram sucked so much that I had to purchase an 'EZ', 'DD 2's', and a DTT transmission, to equal the power and mpg's of the stock '96 12V' I originally test drove in '96.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have kept my 1996 5. 2L gas 5 speed. I have kept tract of all the costs, fuel, and upgrades: I would be $20K ahead today if I would have kept my '96 gasser. This is no bull, it is depressing!

Sorry 'diesel heads!' but my sorry truck now sits at only 95K in my driveway now with the high pressure '$$$$' fuel pump refusing to start my truck when it is warm. Cold, it starts right up, but when warm, it takes forever and a lot of pumping of the throttle to start. Out in the middle of nowhere camping, it kind of ruins a vacation worrying if you will have to pay to have your truck and trailer towed. I've spent over $580 having my truck towed to get repaired. I now feel like setting it on fire!!! :(
