Thinking of buying a truck for conversion

What do ya think of putting a 4bt/6bt and an Allison in this?

Well, if you did do a conversion, I would put an alarm on it so Power Wagon doesn't get any ideas. Power Wagon may have some advice as I think he has a 68.

I have a 65 that looks like a 64 (4 headlights) crew cab 4x4, W200.



Before you buy: MEASURE, MEASURE, MEASURE. The distance from the firewall to the core support is exceptionally short. I figured out that the 6BT was 4 full inches too long to fit in that area.



I do belive the 4 will fit... But also, so will the 6AT, which is externally just slightly longer than the 4BT, but is much smoother, and runs fast enough (probably can run up to 4000) so you can use a non-OD transmission with the 4. 10's your truck is likely to have (or 3. 91's... maybe) and still have some road speed.



The 6A will not have as much power as the 4BT, and isn't as capable of being "BOMB"ed as the 4BT, either. It's also about 300 lbs lighter.



Almost forgot... the Allison would be an abomination... Use a Mopar auto. Better anyway...

I went to pick up the truck this weekend. 360mi each way. I stopped at a scale in a truck stop.



Total weight 20780 (GCVW of 20,000) Front axle 4860, rear 6200, for 11200 total (GVWR 11,000). Subtract the 8k emty weight of the truck and you get the trailer and new(old) truck weighing 12,700. I haven't checked but the new truck should weigh about 7500#.



It was a long trip home. Lots of hills and wind. The truck is cool though. It was a fire fighting vehicle, so it has a unique utility bed. I got pictures but it'll take a few days to get them here.



Does anybody know what axles and engines were available in 1970? It has a BIg gas engine w/a 2bbl carb, dual exhaust, 4spd, transfercase is not attached directly to the transmission and has a pto on the drivers side.



Tell me anything you can. . or where I can find out.

70 dodge spec's

Mark, I have a sales brochure for the 71 Dodges and I am reasonably certain the 70 spec's are the same. The W200 (3/4 ton 4x4) was offered with the /6 and two V8's --the 318 cubes with 210 hp and the 383 with 258 hp (these hp ratings are before they started using a more honest system) The 318 have the dist. in the rar and the 383 have it in the front. Three axle ratios --3:54 4:10 4:89 Three stick trannys -- a 3 speed and two 4 speeds (NP 435 with granny first and NP 445 with close ratio) Brakes are 12. 12 x 2 front and rear and the in cab gas tank holds 25 gals (and you will need it!!!) I haven't checked the transmission yet but I'd bet on the granny first given the military application ( it started off as an AirForce fire fighter) . The Distributor is in the front so that seems to be a 383. the fuel tank is located between the rear axle and the bumper and ITS HUGE.



Who made the axles for those years and how do i go about identifying them?

Man those things are ugly--but in a good way.



My recomendation: budget rockcrawler. Sawzall the fenders, ditch the bed, move up the rear axle and cut off the frame rails, sawzall some more until you have room for 42s or 44s, and weld up the diffs. Add a 2nd t-case if neccesary.

I'm thinking aluminum 19. 5's from rickson with a 12v CTD w/a HX40V (coming soon from Holset), dual 3" mandrel bent exhast, bhaf, cold air induction, allison world transmission, air ride, gotta be able to do work. . need a goosneck. winch, fully detailed under carriage just for show. lots of white paint, a whole herd worth of leather

Power windows and locks, a full sound system w/vcr dvd and game console. 40-20-40 seat up front captains chairs in the middle a laydown rear bench... and, and , and
