My new clutch should bee here on tuesday and while i have the transmission out I was wondering how hard it would be to put a new synchro on third gear. It seems to gring when i shift into or out of third above 2400 rpm. Also should i put a new main seal in the rear of the engine while the transmission is out? If so how hard is this to do?

Come on guys i need some help with this my clutch will be here tomarrow and i am hoping to get it installed over thanksgiving and need to order the parts if need be from the dealer.

grind em

have you tried changing the fluid lately? makes a world of differance. mine is changed at least every 25K and it always helps. Rear main is easy to do

How many miles on ther truck? If there is a lot, I would probably go ahead and to the rear main. I did mine on my '94 last night since the transmission and flywheel is off. Its an easy job, got the seal kit with the installer from Cummins and it was about $36. Easy job. I used a drill and drilled into the old seal with a small bit and screwed 2 eye-hook screws into it that are 180 degrees from one another, stuck a screw driver threw the hole and pulled and came right out... . clean it up with some brake cleaner.

P. S. Be careful taking off that last bolt for the flywheel if you do change the rear main seal. I almost lost a finger. LOL

Truck has 135,000 on it and the stock clutch is toast I got my 13" con FE today. I changed the transmission oil at 105,000 when the fifth gear went out I will call cummins in the morning and ask about the seal kit does anyone have a part number I can give them?

Hello,

Definitely replace the rear main while you have everything off. I ordered the

con fe, rear main seal, and transmission rebuild kit (mainly because of third).

The seal is an easy fix. The transmission is more involved, but definitely worth the

trouble. My third gear was acting like yours. When I took it apart, the synchro

blocking ring was way out of spec. The rebuild is pretty straight forward.

I ordered everything from Quad4x4.

I guess we are on in the same boat. My 3rd gear syncro was acting up too. I pulled the transmission apart and there were a lot of things wrong with it, bearings, and crap. It would have took over $700 in parts to fix everything including updating the 5th gear, so I ran over to Ft. Worth to Standard this past Sat. and picked up a fresh rebuilt one with the fully splined mainshaft already done.

The part # on the rear main seal is 4089342 I believe... . that is what was for my '94.

I also worked on stabbing in the 13" FE and transmission in last night, but didn't have any success. I know what to do now, got to start all over.

Some advice, on the 13" clutch, take the starter out first before you put the flywheel on. Then put the starter back on with the Aluminum spacer and longer bolts. I almost messed up. :-laf Also, its a good idea to put a dab of thread locker on the flywheel bolts, they'll still come back off with an impact if it ever needs to be pulled back off.

Oh, and this is what I got to redo, but make sure when you put the clutch disk in with the plastic alignment tool that comes with the kit, make sure when you put the clutch basket on and start tightening them down to check and see if the alignment tool will come out easy still, if so keep snugging everything up... . then tighten at 20-25# lbs. and pull the tool out. I'll be doing that over tonight. :(

Just some advice I wish I would have known myself before attempting.

synchros aren't tough... these trannies are really simple. the only "specialized" tool I needed was a pair of snap-ring pliers... I used a punch to back the 5th gear nut off. buying the wrench from whoever has the synchros might be a good idea if they're cheap.

otherwise, they're really simple... a lot easier than I thought they would be!!

Thanks guys I am going to cummins now to get the rear main seal they had it in stock for 36 dollars and said that they would be open until midnight. I would really like to get my clutch in this weekend.

Just got back from cummins its a good thing that I went when I did because they were closing at 8 not midnight like the parts guy told me this morning. I dont know if I should wait to put the clutch in and get the parts for the third gear syncro or not. I really need a clutch and I am geting a little ancy with the new one sitting in the living room. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.
