My old post - second gear starts - is getting a little long in the tooth so a new post. Major problem I’m having now is finding somebody to work on my truck We have several transmission shops in Anchorage but they are afraid I suppose to work on older vehicles. I will take full responsibility for the outcome All I want is a governor pressure solenoid and transducer installed, fluid and filter change - how simple is that? I think my problem third gear start will go away. If not plan b but I really don’t know what I will do yet with that?

Ordered a replacement end for the transmission end. Connector. Now if I can get my transmission place replace the solenoid and transducer with some good quality heavy duty parts. Pretty sure there’s a dead shot somewhere also. They always want to use their parts not yours etc. They want the part mark up I suppose

Ok disconnected 8 wire main transmission plug. Drivers side. Square block round inside .Extremely dirty cleaned it up best we could. Tried it while unplugged. 10 amp fuse did not blow Plugged it in Key on fuse blew. What’s next?

You have a short, either in the plug or internally. Could be anything in there including the 20ish year old harness. You would have to find the diagrams posted in your other threads and start ohming from the pins to ground.

I speaking to others that have a fairly sound knowledge of the problem and electrical expertise I have mostly come to the conclusion that the solenoid is shorted out. The transducer is probably ok but will be changed out as well . This is where it all began and had I not been creeper challenged it would have already been done. So it goes into the shop in 10 days so I hope I’m right . I hope to be able to give them enough positive information without overwhelming them. If they will just change the two parts fluid and filter / gasket I think it will be a winner. Time will tell. I will keep everyone posted. This is how we learn and thanks for the help . More later on a few days

Well I went in to the third shop a couple day before I was to drop the truck off. I took a one side page of what I had found and the problem I thought it was and ask them to drain and replace the two parts new fluid gasket filter. Very simple read etc and why I couldn’t do it bad knees etc They called me today and told me to take it to a transmission shop. So I was on a three week waiting list etc so I got on the phone and ordered a gm solenoid and transducer( good parts) should be here in a couple days. Napa for some valvoline atf +4 and filter and a gasket and stepson and my good neighbor will change the parts out in my garage off creeoers and I will be the tool man. But what’s up with these shops don’t they want want the business very strange and I can’t figure it out. Two of the shops never even seen the truck. Weird.

Depends on the trans shop. The one's to run away from are the most well known. As far as whichever ones you've spoken with...probably too simple of a job and they won't make the "big kill" they're looking for, IE customer comes in and says "when I put it in gear it makes this funny noise", then they're like sharks circling a bleeding anything...

Yes they want folks who have no clue. Then they can do their dirty work That’s all I better say on it or I will get in trouble

Ok all good news after 2 months of no truck it’s finally repaired The story is long. We found a bit of metal from the valve body that had broken off falling across two wires at a terminal causing the short. And the other half of the retainer piece and spring in the pan . Lucky to find both pieces. We then knew we needed a new valve body or send it off for a rebuild . I was going to call BD Diesel and order one as the heavy duty solenoid and sensor where also BD parts. DTT Bill K and Pierre back in the day were the heavy hitters. I liked the people and products and still do. So happen the local dealer had ONE vb that I needed. I called BD and verified it was the right one . They were the shop that put my BD exhaust brake in 20 years ago here in town. I always knew they didn’t do transmission work mostly injectors pumps etc. but in visiting with them found a mechanic that they recommend highly. I called him no problem work scheduled a week out and he would use my BD parts and atf fluid etc $285 For 3 hours for the install. Perfect work on time just excellent. Truck shifts great again exhaust brake works etc. so about $1600 for parts fluid flat bed ride etc Insurance helped on the 55 mile ride. I have towing. Truck is repaired. After the best right ????? Transmission shop in town said it was a electrical problem and passed their expertise because it was electrical. Charged me $150 to tell me it had a code and blown transmission fuse. I can’t believe it still . I really thought that’s what transmission shops did but they turned me away. Anyway it’s done and I really appreciate everyones help on the forum. Thank You
