Are the fuel lift pumps on the third gen trucks any more reliable than those on the 98. 5 and up second gens? Also, does anyone recommend a fuel pressure guage on a third gen?

They do have lift pumps but haven't been around long enough to know about reliability issues. Fuel pressure should be monitored as you increase hp. A high power box alone can pull the fuel pressure down to zero.

There have been some failures of lift pumps on third generations. Not a lot but some. Its been mentioned on this site a while back and another site just in the lasft day or two. Not like the older models YET but some.

From what I can tell;

- 1) lift pump pressure can be an issue when bombed

- 2) I have heard of several failures, but it doesn't seem as widespread as 2nd gen lift pump failures.

- 3) I haven't heard of any CP-3 failures due to lift pump failure. This is far different that the 2nd gens, when a lift pump failure was often a precursor to VP-44 failure.

Personally, It sucks if the lift pumps are a weak link and prone to failure, but my biggest fear with my '01. 5 was a VP-44 failure. If the CP-3's aren't affected by low fuel pressure, I am happy.

The answer to your questions are: Yes, they appear to be more reliable and Yes, some people still recommend a fuel pressure gauge, but it seems to be less important than before, especially in a stock truck.

The installation of a pusher pump to assist the stock LP is as good an idea on the 3rd generation trucks as it is the 2nd - even more so if power enhancements are added that place added strain on the stock fuel system.

Dave: Very succinctly put. We won't be bombing the office truck, for sure. Considering that it's a DC HO 600 replacing a GM 6. 5 325 (or so at a narrow peak), in a way, it comes "pre-bombed. "

I suspect the Dodge'll make more torque at idle than the Chebby did at it's narrow torque peak. That was about 2100 RPM, making a noise like an angry bee. When it ran. Or would idle.
