I already figured out that I can get my oil filter cheaper at the Cummins shop ($8. 95 compared to $24. 99)... Now, I need some transmission fluid since I got a leaking transmission (short shifter  ) Can't find a compatable fliud anywhere in town    It just pisses me off the mark up on this crap at the only place you can for sure get it. $20 a freaking quart!!!! come on  I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER this is so *$%#ing stupid. Dodge is sure lucky they have the Cummins, otherwise, no chance in hell i'd buy another.

Sorry for the rant... Just a little ticked that I have to make a long trip and don't have the time to order it from some where else. They should give complimentary vasaline with that crap :{

I like that AMerican made Synthetic OIL. Even the most expensive product is around $25. @ gallon.

And did I mention that the AMerican made Synthetic OIL products do not keep us dependendent on the middle east

And they make our vehicles last longer and work better.

Pennzoil Synchromesh (I think it is called) meets DC specs for the NV5600 and is a whole lot cheaper. It will give you the DC part number right on the back of the bottle.

good info

Casey, If the pennzoil that you mentioned is equivalent to the ATF+4 that is required, then you should splash this info on a new thread for everyone to see. It will save TDR members a ton of money.

As for the price that the "stealers" charge!!! well I happened to need some one day, and went to the only place I new where it was,( a Chrysler dealer) and the parts man was busy. Anyway, a tech. happened to be in the parts room at the time, and said he would help me out. He went back and grabbed a qt. of the transmission oil, and proceeded to look up the price. His eyes went:eek: , and then he looked up their cost, and ended up charging me something to the tune of $2. 25 a qt. :) I told him that for that price, that he should go back and get me 4 or 5 more quarts. which he did. I was all:) He was drinking a Cola that I supplied for him, as I was leaving.

"Moral of the story" I am sure that he sold it to me and the "dealer" still made a profit, I was happy. So I guess that we know how much profit is on that oil. It would seem that when they charge that extreme price that they normally do, that it is like biting the hand that feeds them. Does'nt it???

I'm not certain, but I think the oil for the NV4500 is the only one that you can't get an approved equivalent someplace else. I think the rest give the Mopar number and say "or equivalent" or something like that.

Redline

My local dealer charged $11 per quart when I got some.

I loved Redline MTL in the 6-speed of my 2001 and I have more in my garage waiting to go into my 2003 when the weather warms a bit. The Redline is fully synthetic, the correct weight, and compatible with the synchros.

How about the chevy guys with the allision, right now you can only get it at the dealer [transmission fluid] Its the only one with the right certification and i've heard horror stories about the cost! Dodge is not the only corperation that does this.

nv4500 oil

for the NV4500 manual, The GM guys have the same oil as the DC stuff. Look on the side of your trans at the tag there and it will give you number to ask for.

Also standard transmission in Texas has a good price on a gallon also. do a search on the forums and research TDR Mags of earlier issues and read the discussions.

just my penny's worth

Yes it does to me but they never seem to see it that way. Our local one acts like they couldn't care less if you ever come back, and the parts counter is the worst of a bad lot.

But boy! They sure care where you got your oil if you bring your truck in for a trans warranty issue - they'll deny the claim if you say or they think (and you can't prove otherwise) that you've used anything but what they sell for oil.

Yeah, I did a search on here for what type of oil to use before I headed out to find some. I went to Pepboys, Autozone and O'riellys before the visit to the only Dodge dealership for 35 miles. Nobody around here (central Texas) carries that type of oil  Lucky me :(

I didn't mention to begin with that I have the 6-speed, sorry.

To get the Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid:

1. Pick up phone.

2. Dial 1-800-990-9811

3. Tell the nice person on the phone where you live.

4. Ask the nice person to provide you the contact for the nearest Pennzoil distributor.

5. Thank the person and hang up.

6. Call the phone number provided you in step number 4.

7. Ask them "Are you open to the public, what are your hours, and can you hold a case of Pennzoil Synchromesh for me?"

8. Ask them for their address.

9. Go to www.mapquest.com and click on "Driving Directions".

10. Under "FROM" put your current address. Under "TO" put the address from step number 8. Print these directions.

11. Get in vehicle. Bring money. Bring directions from step 10.

12. Follow directions from step 10.

13. Enter store, speak to nice person at the counter. Tell them you are there to pick up the things you phoned about in step 7.

14. Pay for your oil using the money from step 11.

15. Bring oil home, by following the directions from step 10 backwards.

16. Turn off vehicle.

17. Install oil per manufacturer instructions.

18. Enjoy a frosty beverage for a job well done.

See, piece of cake! I paid $59. 00 for my case of Synchromesh (12 quarts). :p

Preface: I DO NOT INTEND THIS POST TO BE IN A NEGATIVE CONTEXT, OR TO FLAME ANYONE!

Having said that, am I the only person who buys his fluids and filters weeks or even months in advance, so that when it comes time to perform regularly scheduled maintenance I already have everything I need?

Once again: I AM NOT BEING MEAN, EVIL, OR FLAMING ANYONE! NO INSULT INTENDED!:)

rbattelle

That's how I did it, and no, you are not the only one. I made my 30K service preperations for my '01. 5 a month in advance, took everything to the dealer, and had them install it. Amsoil 15w40 in the engine, Amsoil 75W90 in the front diff, Amsoil 75W140 in the rear diff, Amsoil ATF+4 in the xfer case, and the Penzoil stuff in the six-shooter. It all meets Dodge's specs (and let's not start any API wars on this).

LOL. I don't know where I got this terrible reputation for starting API wars. I only mentioned it like twice, and only then because I thought it was important!:(

rbattelle

It wasn't ment towards you personally. I just didn't want the mention of the A word to get anything started.

Oh! I thought you directed that at me, because a couple weeks ago I was nearly slapped when I mentioned the "A" word for the second time. :-laf

This whole topic is like someone buying a Weatherbey rifle and then thinking that they can go find cheap ammo in a Weatherbey caliber. I'm not saying you shouldn't look for a bargain, but sometimes a bargain is still more than you might want to pay.

Nope, you are not the only one... I have everthing needed for oil and fuel filter changes... I just, gasp, didn't have the stuff to top off the "good for life of transmission" fluid in the transmission ;). I do now though. I managed to find a place in town that has the Pennzoil. Sadly, your step by step process was posted too late to help me. Was rather cute though.

When you can get the exact same thing cheaper, why pay more for it? Not trying to be rude but theres no way in hell I'm gonna pay for the $24. 99 mopar filter when I can drive five miles away and get the Fleetguard one from a Cummins shop for $8. 95. And, now that I know where to buy the $4. 99/quart transmission fluid I'm sure not gonna buy the $19. 99/ quart mopar stuff ;)
