Looks like a fantastic Diesel MH

History Channel NOW..showing a HUGE ship engine

the D-max will be in 06 Hummers I think.

we had a surburban at work with the 6. 2. They bought it to pull a 12,000lb trailer!! When it failed, they spent the money for a full banks setup. I drove it once with the trailer and the banks, man 40mph was max speed. Some guys actually drove the setup from New Mexico to Kansas. That would have sucked!!

well,i guess i will be the one to step up and take a beating. 1, im told and have read that hummers came with three speed auto trannys and no od,they also had 4. 56 gear axle ratos, question how fast can a person expect a vehicle with no od and those low gears to run? under those circumstances a 5. 9 wouldnt run that fast. 2 if a sub with a 6. 2 and a banks turbo wouldnt pull a 12k trailer faster than 45mph somethings wrong. it had 3. 08 gears or swayed bad or had a mechanic working on it that didnt know what the hell he was doing, something was wrong! 3 to the guy that mentioned he had a 6. 5 thats been rebuilt twice with less than 50 k on it,what happend to it that required it to need such a premature rebuild?who is your mechanic? not to be rude, but you might need to find another one. i have owned several 6. 2,6. 5 diesels over the years, still got most of them,no in many cases they are not the engine that a ford or dodge diesel is,when it comes to daily heavy duty work, but the 6. 2 engines are tough little engines. i have also rebuilt many of these engines, many with 300k plus on them, most showed very little bearing wear,or cylinder wear. i have 2 ,3/4 ton trucks with 6. 2 engines, and manual trannys. one has 3. 73 gears the other has 4. 10 gears. both will tow a 10k fithwheel camper, same weight in cows or round bales of hay down the interstate doing the posted speed limit with no problems, only the long hills will knock them back to the 55 or 60 mph mark,in fact the truck with 3. 73 gears has a banks turbo on it,it will cruise 70 mph with a 12k trailer on it all day long,362k miles and i finaly put a new engine in it last year. my dads 93 6. 5 has 176k on it,other than a water pump and a auto transmission, the truck has not been touched mechanicly otherwise, the truck pulls heavy loads weekly also, however it does not tow quite as well as my turbo 6. 2... this post is not intended to be a flame, just stateing my personal experiances with these engines... ...

O. k, I will clear up this HMMWV thing. Military HMMWV's (only ones I know) originally came with 6. 2/th400 three speed auto's with no overdrive. They have 5. 12 gears, but they also have 37" tires on them. The only way to get them to go fast was to spin them too the moon. Now, the newer ones, had the same 6. 2 but with a 4l80 overdrive automatic, which you could'nt even use OD because the thing was so gutless it would lose speed on level ground. :( Now, the new, new heavily armored HMMWV's have 6. 5 turbo's and an OD automatic. You are correct in presuming it would not go as fast (top end) with 4. 56 gears and a 5. 9 cummins. However, the cummins would have enough nut to pull the vehicle down the road and use a 3. 54 gear. ;)

EDIT: Hmmwv's do have a double reduction kind of gearing (one at the diff and one at the hub) which is somewhere in the nieghborhood of a 5. 12:1

CRIPES! You'll get a beating just for not hitting the "enter" button and making a new paragraph!..... :-laf

BTW, true hummer's have portal axels, so I doubt they have 4:56's. Also, hill grades will make or break a truck, so general comments about a (insert your favorite engine here) being able to pull (insert weight here) at (insert whatever MPH here) is kind of useless without a grade.

I have lots of friends with 6. 2's and 6. 5's. Every single one of them has raved about the fuel milage and complained about the towing ability (but not in the same sentence... . ;) )

Another friend of mine also had an ex-military Blazer with a 6. 2 in it. He cleared up his 4-wheeling problems by backing it with an SM-465. He loved that thing until he t-boned someone in it.

I am not saying these engines are bad at all, all I am saying is that some of the applications they use them in are probably no the wisest choice.

I have started so many 6. 2's on gasoline soaked rags I can't count, I have beat them as bad as I can, and still never had anything fail except a power steering belt and a few injection pumps. I have to say, the military CUCV pickups and CUCV Blazers are FAR more reliable than the stuff that replaced it.

If you address a couple of the weaknesses with them, they can be halfway respectable when it comes to reliability. One is the mains webs tend to crack where they intersect the side of the block. If cracks haven't started yet, you can install a mains girdle and pretty much eliminate this.

Also replace the timing chain with a better one or go with gears. Slop throws the timing out of whack and you're asking for a broken crankshaft.

Keeping good glowplugs in it helps too. The controller is pretty lousy though which contributes to the hard starting reputation. Supposedly Kennedy glow plugs are the way to go, 6. 2s start a lot better with them.

the banks stuff was actually put on by banks, So i doubt the mechanic had nothing to do with it (although Im not a big Banks fan). Even if the stupid thing had 3. 08 gears in it, 45mph is still ridiculous. Maybe the fact that we are at 5,000' has something to do with it. it its defense, the V-10 ford (bigger piece of junk) that replaced it isnt much better. It only gets like 4 mpg pulling the trailer, and hills kill it to the point the A/C turns itself off. pitiful.

OK, My turn;

- My 6. 5 was rebuilt both times by the local GM Dealership. The truck tows regularly, but less than 5,000 lbs and mostly highway driving. Both rebuilds were top-end rebuilds required due to bent valves/pushrods. I was told that the PLASTIC pces that hold the rocker arms straight broke off causing the damage. In addition, I have had the truck in to three different shops to deal with cold starting issues in the past three months. Many replaced parts and the pce of xxxx will still not start at -10 without plugging it in even if it was plugged in all night before going to the jobsite.

My truck was just picked up from the Dealer this morning after its latest efforts to reduce my wealth; In my hand I have a bill for $4,646. 27 to replace the dragging starter (lists for $605. 00) and the duel mass flywheel which came apart and took out the clutch, flywheel, and input shaft on the transmission. Fairly common apparently.

The 6. 2 may be reliable (albeit gutless as hell), but the 6. 5TD is the biggest turd of a diesel I have ever seen. I've spent around $20,000 dollars on this truck in the last 4 years and each time I fix something, I think OK, it should be good now. This is the last straw. Truck is for sale. I can lease another new Dodge Cummins for less than this turdmobile costs me in repairs.

Oh, yeah, it currently has 197,377 miles on it.

WOW!!!!:--) :--)

I don't really know much about the 6. 2 or 6. 5, but for some reason I love the way the 6. 5 sounds at idle. I don't know why, but for some reason that sound sings to me.

On edit: looks like that thread is now locked... I got an "access denied" message. I think the guy was a total troll anyway.

pelletier, thanks for the info on the hummers, seems like you have been around the 6. 2 engines quite a lot, so you see my point when i say the engines were pretty well put together and reliable, the 4. 56 gears were definitley used in the civ hummers,i have no idea about the military ones. vaughn,i have only seen one 6. 2 engine that had cracked main webs, over the years i have reworked 11 different engines, but as you say,it is a problem that can occur, the timing chain as you mentioned, can be a factor in high mileage engines, but i have never seen a crank failure that was related to them, camshaft and injection pump shaft ,yes. when i rebuilt my engine ,i used both the girdle kit,and the idler gear from dsg of canada. pelletier if you think the 6. 5 was the biggest turd diesel, then you should have owned a 5. 7 in a work truck,to bad about the probs with your truck, you definitly spent more time and patience on it than i would have. i sold my 92 dodge 1ton after little more than a years ownership,1 rearend, frontend rebuild,1 getragged transmission ,all at less than 60k miles, when i realized the transmission was goin bad again,i unloaded it, had less than 70k on the clock.

I know all about the 5. 7 as I was in the automotive parts business for years and as I said in my first post in this thread, the only diesel engine more gutless than a 6. 2 in a pickup truck was the 5. 7, which IMO set the whole diesel pickup scene back by several years. But you're right, I am lucky enough to say I never owned one of those.

By the sounds of it, you know how I feel after your problems with your 1st gen. The difference is, of course, that we are comparing engines and it sounds like at least your Cummins treated you well (even if the rest of your drivetrain didn't)! I stand by my comments on the 6. 5TD. The Duramax may not be as good as a Cummins, but it's a vast improvement over what they used to have.

I hope you boys in the Military get the DM in the H-1's soon.

Sounds like we could save some $$$$$$

and start buying Chinese-----matter of fact - maybe we could just hire their military - it would be a lot cheaper... . ONLY KIDDING!!!!!!!
