Reminds me of a combo I saw here in Tucson a few months ago. A Saturn pulling a full size travel trailer, probably about 22', and not an ultra-light one either.

That was great!

That was worth waiting for(with my useless dial-up connection). We've been pulling a TT across the country the last few years, and it's amazing what people will try to pull with the wrong vehicle. I remember pulling into a campground in MN a couple of years ago and talking to a guy that was pulling a 30' TT (equipped with a slide-out) with a Dodge Dakota equipped with a 4. 7L V-8. He said he had planned to go to Yellowstone, but the new truck died in Rapid City, SD(He started in WI). He said the rear axle got so hot, the plastic part of the speed sensor on the rear axle melted and it spewed out the gear lube. He spent his vacation in Rapid City having his rear axle overhauled at the dealer. I asked him why he bought such a small truck for such a large trailer, and his response was " A full-sized truck won't fit in my gargage"  . Another common thing I see, is people pulling big trailers and not having any mirror extensions on their tow vehicle. You can be behind them and not even see what is pulling the trailer. There's no way they can see what's behind them. Kinda scary when you see the tow vehicle has NY plates on it, and they're in WY. It must be a bummer going half way across the country wondering every time you make a lane change.

I saw a car (old Buick as I recall) pulling a 5th wheel :--) He had a ball mounted on the trunk and was using 5th/goose adapter. I didnt talk to him but he HAD to have re-enforced heavily in the trunk. It was not a very big trailer but too big for the car for sure.

Somewhere here in America I can just see a camper/RV sale-person telling someone this and how many have heard it... ..... "Certainly you can pull that 34fter with your small S-10 Blazer. You see,it shows you right here in the book its ok. ". I think that is what happened there. You would be amazed what I see towing campers as I traverse the nations highways in my big truck. It also amazes me how many people have no clue on how to set their weight distributing hitches up correctly(I am convinced they only slap it together and run it) and end up with their bars at negative angles doing them absolutely no good or running with no anti-sway controls... ... Andy

once saw a 2wd s-10 with a 30 ft gooseneck flatbed stuck pulling onto the main drag, landing gear caught the road and had the a$$ end of the truck in the air. I asked what the guy was thinking he siad he thought he would be all set with the 383 stroker.

:--)

That reminds me of this guy trying to pull his boat out of the water at the Alton Bay boat ramp in Alton, NH (Lake Winnipesaukee)...

Tow 'rig' was an older GM G-Body... rear drive... V8 under the hood...

The car couldn't get enough traction to pull the boat/trailer out of the water... . so he was sitting there imitating John Force... literally burning the tires off the rims. It was hilarious!!

I've seen some absolutely hilarious things at boat ramps... I could spend a whole day there and never have a lack of things to laugh at.

Coming back to the Houston area from San Antonio pulling our 5th wheel, I finally saw it in the oncoming (westbound) side of I-10. A clapped out 4 cylinder Ford Ranger pulling what looked to be a 30-32 foot travel trailer. Looked like he had it floored to run about 45 MPH with the rear suspension sitting on the bump stops!

Reminds me of our purchase of our first 5th wheel in 1996. We drove onto the lot in a brand new Ram 3500 V-10 dually and asked the salesman what we could tow. His answer - "Anything on the lot. Heck, you could pull the building away with that truck!" :(

Location: Liberty, MO, I-35 Northbound

Situation: I'm pulling a 9,000 lb. 31' Fifth Wheel RV at 65mph and get passed by an older Dodge Caravan towing a Sunbird 195 I/O boat at 75 mph.

Result: I couldn't stand it and had to pass that ignorance!

Note: He tried to hang with me, but eventually lost out on the small rolling hills between Liberty and Cameron.

I should have crammed my brakes when he was on my bumper just to see him jack knife that rig!

BTW - I saw a jack-knifed Carvan and a pop-up camper on I-540 south of Fayetteville last Friday!

About 11 years ago, I saw a roof-mount fifth-wheel setup on a large GM sedan at a used car lot just outside of Alamogordo, NM. That would be scary - having that 5th wheel literally on top of you.

I saw a huge boat behind a Ford Exploder get totalled coming out of Springfield mo heading south towards Nixa on 160. He started swaying as he headed down James river hill and when he hit the first bridge the Exploder flipped over on it's side taking a 50,000. 00 boat with it. I couldn't figure out why someone with that expensive of boat would be trying to tow it with that cheap of a tow rig. My guess is that he was from Springfield and didn't have much experience in towing things.

Not quite as bad as all the stories above, but when I was younger my dad had a '76 Toyota Celica GT. We would cram that thing with 5 people in the car and as much gear as would fit in the trunk, then hook the biggest Jayco popup they made at the time to the back of it and drive through the Smoky Mountains to campgrounds.

Looking at pictures every now and then of that setup is hilarious. Dad even had temporary towing mirrors mounted on the fenders above the wheelwells. He also had air shocks on the back to compensate for the weight. I still shake my head thinking about that. He's much smarter now...
