Anybody ever see anything like this? It seems to be a Fifth-wheel adapter for a vehicle that can't attach a 5th wheeler. To my mind, it's an accident waiting to happen. Seen in SE Ohio, it looks homemade by someone that can weld but hasn't a clue about the balance of forces:

I've seen a few of them around that appear nearly identical to that one. Apparently they are DOT legal and manufactured by somebody.

looks to be a modified unit, that used to be used by vehicles in the 40's, 50's and early 60's, to tow a trailer.

before people could afford a second vehicle for hauling and towing.

i know my uncle talks about having to have lumber and sheeting frieghted in by train. as no-one he knew had a pickup when his dad was building a addition on the house.

if i was to purchase something like that, i would definatly have better tires on the unit. a good set of 19. 5's would be the ticket.

They are used for trailer deliveries, most of the time for horse trailers so you can deliver 2at a time. Most gooseneck horse trailers have the axles moved way back, so they behave ok when doing this. It is unusual to see one with a 5th wheel on it. You can't see it in the picture but most of these slide straight in to your receiver (thats why all the adjustments) and the tires turn on the dolly, it behaves kind of like a tow bar car being forced to trun and you are not going to back these up.
