Those damned Michelins

Moby truck came with these 265/75X16E Michelin LTX/AS rim protectors. With 25,000 on the truck, one of the tires really came apart a week ago. Had to order one, still waiting. This morning I came out to the truck and it looked like the left front had a bad case of acne, little bubbles all over the sidewall. This was excuse enough. I carefully drove 2 miles to Les Schwab and had them put on a set of their tires. Maybe now I will have some traction in snow or rain. That will be a pleasant change.

Just in case there is any doubt, I do not reccomend these Michelins, in fact I'm a bit suspect of all Michelins at the moment.

I'll report on the new tires ASAP.

REAL TIRES

I read your post and my truck came with the same tires. I really didnt like mind either,i live in the country and last summer while bringing hay in i had a thorn in the side wall flat tire. I took it off and when we broke it down i could not belive how thin the side wall are, looks scary to me. I installed some real tires on it and the truck drives alot better. Happy Camper...

Don't know anything about Michelin LTX/AS? But I have used Michelin LTX/MS's on several trucks along with BFG AT/KO's and I did the research before buying them. Michelin LTX/MS and LTX/AT's are the highest quality tires made. Next time you need tires you might try one of them.

I have been shopping for new tires for a few weeks. The LTX/MS are supposed to be way better than the A/S. After I spent about an hour and a half at a big o shop, I decided to go with some big o Bigfoot something or others. I can't remember the name exactly; I will be getting them tomorrow. We (the owner, who was extremely nice, and I) went through tires for that whole time, and he rolled the four that I narrowed it down to all side-by-side. My main concern is how long they will last, second is how well the truck handles with them on. The Bigfoot was BY FAR the stiffest. It is the same price as the BFG A/T K/O. It should last a little longer, and get slightly less traction off road. They also come with free road hazard warrantees.

Dont forget....

Dont forget that the tires you had trouble with were OE junk. Like most everything else on any new American vehicle, stock sucks. Aftermarket is the way to go... . it's the same in tires. The Michilins that come on the truck are *probably* built to a different standard than those you can buy from say, Tirerack. Mine have about 40k on them and appear like they've got about 20 more left!

I got 60K miles out of my Michelin LTX M/S tires that came on the truck new. I liked them so much I went out and bought the very same thing, same size, as replacements. They wear like iron and stick like glue. Only the B. F. Goodrich AT & MT come close in quality in my opinion, but they won't last as long. They do look a heckuva lot better, though, than the Michelins!!!

Sorry to hear you had trouble with your Michelins, that's a major bummer.

Not wanting to tell you what to do CAnderson . If these tires are the same price as the BFG AT/KO's you might want to get the BFG AT/KO's. I have them on a Toyota Landcruiser with over 40K miles on them and they don't even look worn. When I bought the BFG AT/KO's a couple of years ago they were considered the best AT's going. I would look closily at the Michelin LTX/AT's or the BFG AT/KO's, before I bought any off brand. I've talked to several tire installers and suspension guys that were members of my Landcruiser club and they all say that no one makes as good of a tire as Michelin. BFG is owned by Michelin.

I am going to have to replace my Michelin AT tires in another 10,000 miles or so its a shame when you can only get 100,000 miles on tires

michlin tires

i have used michlin tires for over 20 years on trucks , cars heavy equipment and now aircraft . have never had a problem with any of them. the concord super sonic jet now has michlins . i just installed a set of michlin ltx 265s on my truck and expect to get 100000 mi. on them.

Like you FourbarR, I. ve been using Michelins since 1960. These were not just the worst Michelins I'v ever had, but the worst tires.

Mine has the LTX A/S, it has 49000 mi on it now and needs tires pretty quick.



I'll lok into the M/S - I didn't realize there were any qualtiy difference - only appearance difference from the A/S.

I had the Michelin A/s tires and hated them from day one. They wear great but traction is a joke. I can't tell you how many times wet grass required 4 wheel drive. Traction on wet pavement wasn't much better. I'm much happier with my off- brand Futura Dakotas. Hopefully they will stand the test of time.
