Dumb Turbo Question

NV4500 synchro prices

I am running the super old school engine mounted cummins/carter LP and 4600 7#frame mounted pusher. I think the days are short for my Virgin VP and I want to upgrade my fuel system. I have expirenced two cases where letting off of full throttle too quick has airlocked the VP. Meaning I had to roll off the side of the road and crack the lines and purge the air and then retighten before it would run.

How often do u guys change your filters? I assume the units pre filter the fuel before it even hits the pump saving the pump from wear. If im wrong tell me.

just trying to get an idea of the cost associated in the filtered models of fuel pumps before I buy one. Is there a way to plug off the filter nipples if u got tired of buying the filters?

I have an early FASS 150, and the hydraulic filters it uses are pretty big. For me it's a couple years between filter changes. If it makes a difference, I gutted the stock lift pump and filter setup and I run the fuel straight from the FASS up to the VP44.

You don't want to run unfiltered fuel into your VP44.

I have one of the early AirDog FP80's and I've been changing the 3 micron fuel filter every other year, which is around 10,000 miles, and I think that has been over kill. I drain the water separator once a month, but I've never seen any water in it. I've never changed the water separator canister but I have a spare just in case. I did retain my factory fuel filter and I change it when I change the AirDog filter. Depending on the fuel you get, I'm pretty sure you could go 25,000 miles or more between changes. Fuel filters usually plug slowly. You should have a fuel pressure gauge, so you could base your intervals when you first notice a slight pressure loss. I would keep an extra filter in the truck though. Guys in the colder climates might not want to push the filter to it limits either. Hope this helps.

Regards, Mike.

I've got the same set up as midnite and I usually go about 30K between filters. Could probably go more, they're kinda pricey.

I have the FASS 150 which is a great system. I try to replace at 12 mos. but it's easy to forget. The last filter change was at 18 mos. and I had a really difficult time getting the old filters off. Any recommendations on what to do for easier removal? Thanks, Dave

I run a FASS 150/200-1010@45psi on my 12v and have for a few years now.

It is what they now call their "Heavy Duty Series" and it has the large filters on it. I usually run my filters until I see a drop in pressure on the gauge and its usually not until about 50k or so when that is seen(unless you happen to get a bad load of fuel). I run the 3 micron filters on mine and usually carry a spare 10 micron just in case its needed for any mishaps. .

The FASS is plumbed right from the pump into the P-7100 and i have not used the factory fuel heater since the install. Someone asked about filter removal,I just use a standard Snap-On filter wrench and they come off easily. Most times when they are hard to get off its because the person over-tightened them and/or did not apply any oil to the seals when they installed them... ... . Andy

I plan on installing an AirDog on my 03 and will install a low pressure gauge to help with when to change filters. The Cummins Dist here sell replacement filters through their Fleetguard line for decent prices. Shadrach

I have the FASS 95/95 and in the abscence of any recommendations in the FASS installation manual, have opted to change mine out every 25,000 miles.
