I was in Texarkana last week and had something interesting happen...
Was running some pretty rough back roads, lots of loose gravel. Ruts deep enough to drag differentials... but not slippery enough to even warrant 4wd towing my job trailer. I had made my third trip back into the site and picked up a rock between the splash shield and rotor... it caused the typical squealing, and I thought nothing of it until the ABS and Brake lights popped on. I didn't have time to tear into it at that point since I was leaving for PA the following day.
Tore into it tonight... had a suspicion that the rock had dropped onto the exciter gear for the ABS and either tore the wires off, or wrapped up and took the tip of the sensor off. My second hunch was correct... rock had wedged between exciter and the tip had been compromised. It hadn't completely took the tip off, but it had caused visible damage.
This is one "issue" that I kinda suspected might happen at some point... it finally did. Having the exciter exposed, and not enclosed like a unit bearing, is probably the only weakness of this system. The ABS sensor has no protection.
So just keep this in mind, if the ABS and brake lights pop on after a day of bad roads, suspect a damaged sensor.
