QUICK HELP!! Chevy AL Rims/tires

Not open for further replies.
Ordered the 19. 5" x 6" Rickson's yesterday. Sounds like I paid too much--$205 per incl. shipping from MD to MN. Accuride dealers apparently didn't know what to look for. Oh well, I'm just happy to have found an alternative to 17's... lousy tires for almost the same $$$ as 19. 5's.

I want tires that will last me 80k+. Enough of this changing tires every 35k. I ordered them in black powder coat, might decide to add trim rings later. Love the look of black rims, especially on my white truck. Can't wai 'til they get here.

What kind of tires should I get? I've never bought the most expensive tires. I might this time. Michelin XDE-MS are supposed to wear extremely well. Any thoughts... I ain't gonna go cheap this time. If the spendy tires won't hold up, next time I'll go cheap. Just wondering what's out there...

That looks sweet. Now tint the windows and the truck will be ready for the new remake of "Duel".

Actually, for me, it reminds me of the vans in the movie "slither" with James Caan.

JD,

That's a great deal for the Rickson's. By the time you buy the Accuride rims & have them machined you're close to what you paid plus they come grey.

You can't go wrong with the Michelin's but I'd buy a closed tread if I were you... nothing too aggressivor the fronts will wear funny.

Post some pics! Oo.

I was knida wondering about the finish on the accurride's. I like the thought of the black powder coating plus the brass stems. I ordered them direct from Rickson. I know a lot of guys won't talk to a woman about tires and stuff, but Heather really seemed to know her stuff.

I had a couple of sets of Mastercraft Courser AT's on my last truck. They have an "open" tread and I never got any of the "cupping" sometimes encountered. I ordered the Michelin XDE-MS yesterday and we'll see what happens. My fronts never wear funny, I just burn off the rears too fast. I've had cheap tires and middle-of-the-road tires, but I've never spent the $$$ for "the best".

If holiday shipping doesn't screw things up too bad I should be able to get some pics between X-mas and New Years.

New Question. Should I get the trim rings? Not the full simulators, just the rings. Kinda "old school" lookin'. :D Doesn't fit the "policecar" look mentioned earlier, but they're kinda  Anybody got any pics of a truck w/rings

JD, Funny you should mention girls & tires... most young guys that have seen my truck go nuts for the black rims. Most older guys think it looks rediculous because they're used to Chrome on their Packards & Model "T" s. Ha Ha!

The funny part is I've had at least 10 women come up to me going nuts over the truck & tires... . whad up with that?

What ever it is... it's good! Oo.

As for the trim rings... I prefer no trim ring with balancing powder so you don't have any wheel weights or have to static balance them but that's just my opinion. Go to Rickson's Webpage & there are lots of pictures... here I'll post one for you.

I look forward to the pictures!

Doh!!!

I somehow managed to miss the "customer trucks" section. I kinda like the rings. Black rims w/rings gets my vote. Simulators suck. Aluminum is nice, but too spendy and I'd hate to check tire pressure on one of those things.

I don't know anything about balancing powder. . someone teach me.

Balancing powder is used by most large trucks for balancing heavy wheels & tires... often refered by brand name-Equal.

You'll hear varying stories on it... here's the pro's & con's...

Pro's

-great for heavy tires where a ton of weights would be necessary.

-As your tires wear they don't need to be re-balanced.

-If you go off-road & tear lugs off your tires no rebalancing.

-If your tires pick up rocks or mud they will stay in balance.

cons

-Expensive($25/tire or so)

-Only fill tires with air at a Bodyshop or somewhere with really dry air.

How can the load rating of those wheels be correct? There is not even such thing as a 19. 5" tire that I know of with such small ratings...

If you drop the psi in the tire down to the minimum factory rating, you're pretty close to the rim's rating. Depends on which tire. At either 85 or 90psi the Michelin XDEMS are rated at 3885lbs. Drop that psi down to the min of 75 and the rating should be low enough to match the rim. Most rims that I've looked at, be it tractor, trailer, p/u or car, aren't rated at high as the tires. Doesn't really make sense to me either.

Well, I finally got my hands on a set of bread truck wheels last night. They are the 6" wide 19. 5" wheels, just like Marty1 listed. I am hoping Marty will see my post here as I am curious if he has still had no problems running the 245's on them. That is the tire I would like to run on them and I do a lot of miles pulling heavy so, want to make sure that there are no issues with spacing between the duals. I know it was listed that there were none so far but, I would like to know if more miles has uncovered any new problems with that set-up.

Thanks,

Camp

6" Wide should be perfect for 245's. Would you think that would be too skinnny of a rim or too wide of a rim? You could always run 225's if you were concerned.

The concern is the offset. According to the Rickson site, you want the 6. 75" wide wheels for 245's so you can get the 5. 5" offset. The 6" wheels only have 5" of offset, effecting your spacing between the rear duals. The table I am looking at is on this page:

Camp,

It looks like marty1 really started something here.

I think that I just picked up a used set myself. They had three and they say that they found four more. I'll know this week.

Wheels: 100. 00

Machineing: 25. 00

Powdercoat: 65. 00

Total: 190. 00

How does this compair to what you're finding?

I will have them machined by Taylor Made Wheels here in So. Cal. . He says that he chucks the wheel where the tire bead contacts the rim, so that the hub is better concentric with the wheel and tire.

The other thing that he said he could do for 45. 00 is take what will be the rear inner wheel apart and slide the rim in from the mounting plate 3/4" for better rear spacing.

The bottom line is I would like the option to run 245's if I can. Is a 6" rim just too small to do so?

Thanks,

Frank

Wow, you got a great deal on those wheels. I paid $450 for a set of 6 and they are a little ruff. That is the first set I have found here in Denver and I have been looking for a while too. I am going to bead blast them before machine work and powder coat. I have not found a place to get the powder coating done yet but, I don't pay for machine work since my neighbor will do them for me. He has done 3 sets of hummer wheels for my group of friends now and we trade out parts and tech advice for his Jeep :D

I hadn't thought about recentering the wheels for the rear. I could do that but, it is a bit more work to cut the center out and move it. I'm really not interested in running spacers though so, I need to think a little more about that.

Thanks,

Camp

Camp,

My 245's have over 75K on them now... never a flat tire & only half worn out. My truck is on Buckstop's website with my fancy new bumper on it if you want to see what they look like.

I'd never go back to them sissy 17"tires. Too fragile for my use. Buckstop Pictures
