On an early VP44 I understand that an edge comp. or similar wire tap type mod can be quite risky.

My 98. 5 (see sig) received a shiny new VP44 in 2001. Is this new pump an updated version that would have been the same as the new trucks had then? ('02's were being built as the repair was in the fall of '01)

I am in search of a new fueling module and I think this time I need to tap the pump wire, providing I can do so with out destroying my pump.

I'm in this for the long haul, looking to keep this truck for at least another 10 years or so. Injection pumps are not maintainance items and should never need replacing even if they do have to work a little harder.

I believe there were some upgrades done to the pump during the 2001 model year that improved their reliability with the wire tapped. You should know with in the first half hour of use if tapping the wire is harming your pump. If the rotor hasn't bound up by then you are good to go. I just tapped mine a couple of weeks ago. I was a little nervous at first, but it's still working fine & the extra fueling is an eye opener. =-)

The pumps made in 2001 had the brass sleeve in the timing piston area. For the pumps made after January 1st, 2004, they went to steel sleeves. They are supposed to be more reliable.

I have an 2001. 5 that was built in Nov. 2000, does this mean I have one of the better pumps, or is it 50/50 chance.

pump updates

I have heard that also that the new pumps and or recons are all updated. Mine was replaced in July 2004 with a pump from Dodge. Supposed to have all the updates in it. We'll see, I just got brave enough to put my EZ back on yesterday, WOW, after the RV275 install last week, it makes me smile once again. :):)
