Just curious as to what some of you would advise for someone who tows only occasionally but usually very heavy.

I've written out 370's already and was looking at Bully Dog 300HP injectors but was told that it wouldn't do much for the truck? Now I understand from stock yes it would, but this is for information for me to put back for later. I'm looking into getting a clutch and #10 plate in the next month or so so these injectors will be on down the line.

Anyhow what are some suggestion on Injectors to help in the power dept. but keep the EGT's under wraps for occasional heavy towing? DDII's have been suggested but I cannot find a price for just injectors on their website.

Anyhow I'll shutup now because your opinion is what I want.

Thanks,

I didn't see them in your signature but I would start with a plate & elbow and a governor spring kit before messing with injectors. It'll wake it up without as much of a mileage penalty. Of course that's just my opinion.

As you can see from my sig I have the BullyDog 300HP marine injectors in my truck for about 3 weeks now. Yeah, the plate and and transmission are great upgrades but WOW nice increase in power. I can't imagine what the 375's would do. Also the 300's aren't too bad in snow/rain. I couldn't see spending about double the price for DIII's and get about the same increase in power. Keep in mind the 300's are stock parts for a marine engine - not honed out like others (that my be good or bad, I don't know). Besides the TC, it's the best upgrade I've made yet.

3K GSK is coming @ Christmas:D

TST's 1000FT/LBS Clutch very soon

Then a TST # 10 kit to follow shortlyOo.

I'm just trying to gather some information on injectors to make the decision much easier on down the road.

As stated I need something smaller than 370's, but I want to be getting something for the money I will be spending. :)

So your saying you had a noticeable increase in power from the 300HP BD's? Did you do all this at once or in steps?

I had a very noticeable increase in power across the board with the injectors. Yes, I did it in steps. First the TC, shift kit and plate. Then the BHAF. Then exhaust. Then injectors. The plate was nice but not nearly as good as the injectors. Remember the plate gives you more rack travel for more fuel at full throttle. Injectors give you more fuel across the board.

got smoke? - Do a search on the following: High Egt's - Why? I received some great post. I cannot express strongly enough the importance of understanding what is going to happen to your EGT's when towing. I am in the process of chasing my EGT's, but I really think I will probably have to de-tune (no 370 injectors).

I started the thread with the following:

I must be missing something. Am I the only one having problems with EGTs? Normal driving (empty) no issue, hard acceleration, it does not take long to hit 1500 degrees (pyro pre-turbo). I have no reason to believe the Pyro is bad.

Here is my set-up:

1. ’96, 2WD

2. 3. 54 (?) gears, w/aux US Gear Trans (as under drive)

3. Transmission – DTT (did it all)

4. TC - DTT 89 %

5. ISSPRO Pyro

6. BHAF

7. 3K GOV Kit

8. #10 Plate (adjusted all over the place, currently in stock position). Boost elbow (38-lbs).

9. 370 Marine Injectors

10. 3 ½ inch straight exhaust.

11. Timing – still stock, unless it slipped.

12. Valves – just adjusted them.

13. AFC – stock parts. Adjusted so many times I replaced the screws with Allen head. I think I am qualified to write a book on the AFC (minus the AFC Spring).

Numbers 7, 8 and 9 were from Piers, as he suggested.

Obviously, my next major mod is the turbo (or housing). However, when I read signatures, others have my mods without turbo mods, and I don’t hear about EGT issues.

With CAT and Muffler, ran 250 HP on Mustang dyno. Could not run full power because EGT’s were to high. I have installed straight pipe, and cannot see a major change although have not put it back on the dyno.

I am interested in thoughts and/or suggestions. If you have the same combination as I, let me know.

Wayne, You might want to upgrade the turbo at least to a 16 housing. The ATS three piece exhaust manifold may help slightly too.

Wayne,

You might try advancing your timing. The way it is I think your fuel is too late in the crank rotation to get the most out of it. More heat for the amount of go you want.

QRTRHRS and Joe G. - I agree with both of you. My post was to assist "got smoke? " is his decision to upgrade his injectors.

Thanks,

Wayne

Mark;

You have gauges.

Your timing is up to effective°.

You already have the 215 pump and injectors.

That alone is a solid baseline.

Do the governor springs, AFC spring, and #10 plate. Evaluate where that got you which should be nearing 400 hp.

IF it isn't enough, THEN decide if bigger injectors are required before a turbo upgrade. You will be at the threshold for a bigger turbine housing or possibly a complete 40 series turbo.

I am in kind of the same postion as got smoke. My future looks like trading out the Schied plate, which was in the truck when I bought it, and I have no idea of what it is rated at. I traced it last time I was in checkin out the secret lever adjustment, but haven't had time to check up on it yet. Anyway, after the plate I am gonna do some serious cash saving, as I plan to do several things all at once. I really want to keep my EGT's in check, so I am thinking I will go with an ATS manifold, and 370's. I am still pondering turbo's, but I am sure it will either be a PDR 35-16 or a PDR 40-16. At that point, we'll see how the Centerforce clutch is holding up.

I can't really see doing anything beyond that as far as power is concerned, because I think once you get past that point engine longevity could really take a dive.

Anyone running a setup similar to this? What plate would go well with this setup to keep decent performance but also keep the EGT's from going through the roof? I don't tow everyday, but when I do, it is usually to the tune of about 10K pounds or more. I guess I am looking for a setup that will work well as a daily driver, but also tow well when I need to. I am not really into racing or pulling... but I might be interested in hooking to a sled sometime. Hell, I don't know what's gonna happen. All of this is in the future, and most depends on where I end up after I graduate from college next December. I like to have a halfa$$ plan, though.

Joe G. - Thanks, I need all the help I can get.

QRTRHRS - My wife says she don't need you guys help spending "her" money. LOL

esommer2500 - the manifold would be great, but I will bet you that unless there is a special reason for the manifold, an upgraded turbo would be a better investment, after the mods you listed. My suggestion, do the injectors last. A lot of cash just to discover too high of EGT.

got smoke? - Read very carefully the suggestion JohnE made. By far, it is the wisest. DO NOT ignore the EGT issue.

I intend to do the timing and PDR HX35-16. If that does not put the EGT's in check, the 370's are coming out :( . The smoke is cute at Diesel functions, the bragging rights are fun, the 40 to 60 HP is neat, but the EGT’s make it too hot  in the Kitchen.

Bye the bye, Santa let it slip, my SPX-MILLER timing tool kit should be here by Xmas. Oo.

One of the penalties not plainly stated with governor springs is EGT. GSK is really nice because it extends the rpm range for fueling. The street driving is really nice with a GSK. If you are towing, the trick is to keep you engine RPM under 2,500 when pouring the fuel. The engine is basically an air pump. The higher the rpm the more air it pumps. High EGT is basically an indication the turbocharger is not handling the air flow.

One of the basics is to advance your timing to where you extract the most power by the piston and expell the coolest exhaust gas. Upgrades such as remapping the turbo (PDR HX-35), bigger turbine housing or even a larger turbo are the other common air flow enhancements.

ME?

I have 3K GSK, #4 plate, and 20° timing. My EGTS only get scarey in the 3k rpm range.

I was talking Al at PDR last Monday about "practical" hp limits for towing. He thought about 325-350 rwhp range. You can see from my profile that Piers has played with my truck since new. The last "tuning" that was done was to slide the plate back to reduce EGT. It now gets to 1350 only on extended pulls (ie 9% grades with the trailer) at higher rpm (2500). I estimate that I lost about 20 hp but the security of lowering the EGTs was worth it.

Like most things in life, engine mods are trade offs. I really like my current set up for what it do. If I never towed, the plate would go forward in a flash. If I could put on a 40 turbo and keep my exhaust brake, I would. If Piers invents a super cooling gismo that garrantees a 200 drop in EGT without affecting the other issues, I'm first in line.

Until then I'm happy.
