I am considering trading my 01 on a 3rd gen. 5. 9 6spd quad cab. I do not have one picked out yet. Wondering what i should look for in one of these. Are they better than the 2nd gen. 24valves? Any regular problems with these?

Thanks guys

I sold my '99 and dropped into this '07 two years ago. The improvement in driver fatigue is amazing. Steering and braking are much improved. Cab noise is greatly diminished and the hydroformed frame carries my popup with enhanced stability. My "53" cracked @ 17,500 miles which was covered under warranty but... . I'd drive one and make up your own mind. Going into debt during these times is a tough call.

I've been fighting this too and decided to keep my 01' which I know what I have and with everything I've done to it I can't get anything out of, I don't want to trade and then start spending again, I did really like the ride, room and steering in my 04' I sold

"Are they better than the 2nd gen. 24 valves?" They don't have a VP-44..... they must be better!

I don't think the VP44's are any great issue as long as you keep fuel to them, I put an injector pump in mine right after I bought it at 105k, within another 5k I put on a fass 150, the lift pump was the real culprit in my opinion and I think some 3rd gen's are having lp problems too although it isn't as hard on some of the other injector pumps

As I understand the injectors are 1000. 00's of dollars for all 6. A vp44 is a little over 1000. 00. Second gen has no emission equip. to speek of. I personally think the 3rd gen seats s**k. I am keeping my 99 for a long time. All of this is my personal opinion of course and yours may vary.

'03-'04. 5's have no emission equipment either. For no substaniated reason, I would prefer the Dana axels on the 2nd Gen's over the AAM running gear on the 3rd Gen's but the 3rd's brakes beat the snot out of the Gen 2's.

I upgraded a few years ago from a 95 to an 05. The 95 was great, however the 05 is much more improved. Go for it.

Just make sure you get a Saltillo, Mexico built truck as they are better then St. Louis built.

A word of warning: be prepared for disappointing trade in values. Expect to get about 50% of Kelly Blue Book trade-in, especially if it's more than 4 or 5 years old.

I just picked up an '08, and luckily, I didn't need the trade in to make it work. If you can, buy a new one now and sit on your old truck until spring. With tax return money coming back for a lot of folks, that might be more of a seller's market.

At least I'm willing to bet on it.

I've got an 04. 5 love the truck no real problems that my '00 had fuel pumps, starters, brakes every 20,000 just to name a few. the one complaint I have is I HATE the seat of this 04. 5 It pushes you against the door and makes you feel like your in atime out sitting in ther corner. move your rear end to get out o the corner and you've got a bar on your hip bone, the longer i drive it the more I wonder if I could get a 2nd gen seat to fit.

The seats are hard as a rock on these things. I choked when I got my Marathon seat covers and didn't order extra padding and camo fabric. You have to wonder who some of these companies use for test subjects.

I sold my '01 Regular Cab for this '07 Quad. Though I enjoy the '07 very much, I probably wouldn't have made the change if I had to do it over again.

Please let me clarify why I would not buy my 2007 5. 9L if I had to do it over

The noise level is much lower in the '07 and the brakes are better due to the disc rear, other than that I don't think there is much improvement. In fact, I think that with all the electronics and common rail injection, reliability is reduced and maintainance cost are going to be much higher and more frequent as the miles increase. What's more is the ability to work on your own truck is greatly reduced due to the increase in technology and the very, very expensive maintainance test/calibration and programming tools, along with the high price of injectors,ECM's etc. Even the light systems on my truck is computer controlled. Of course this is true for just about any new vehicle.

I don't think that a person that trades in every year or every three to five years would have to consider the above argument. The same as one that trades in with at or less than 100K miles.

For myself, I would have been money and reliability ahead to find a good used 12 valve or earlier 24valve 4WD and correcting the main problem/s with that particular year... . Avoiding the 53 block completely.

By the way with so much glass in the new truck it is like a greenhouse inside at 65 OAT it is pretty warm in the cab.

YMMV

Still sounds much better than a Furd Powerjoke!

I traded off a 98. 5 because I found out it had a 53 block, traded up for an 03. And i love it, already had an injector go bad, $345 for one injector. but i havent regreted it at all.
