What are the thoughts on turbo timers in the diesel world?I only ask because i never understood why the guys in the Mazda rotary world swear by them. I figure if letting the car run for a few minutes was that big a deal then the manufacturer would put in a timer or tell you in the manual to let it sit a bit before shutting it down. Well than again maybe they do i have never read a owners manual for a turbo charged vehicle.

Chris don't know about worrying about a timer as long as you have a pyrometer (pre turbo) and let temp drop to 300* or a little less timer is not necessary. Instead of driving last block or two with heavy throttle:D run in easy and you can see pyro temp drop right off, idea to shut down when oil in turbo is bellow the flash point for itself. bill

I prefer my Turbo Temp Monitor from

http://www.dieselpage.com

Part number R4130, it's made by Isspro and automatically shuts down my Cummins when the exhaust gas temperature falls below 300 degrees, sometimes the engine is cool enough to shut off when I turn the key off but sometimes it will run for quite a few minutes if it's hot out and I've been pulling hard.

The reason for it is that oil will burn at slightly over 300degrees, what happens is that the oil in the turbo will burn(coke) after shutdown then you will have particles of burnt oil(charcoal) and then when you start the truck up next time you pump those particles through your engine causing unnecessary wear.

Either monitor your gauges or get some kind of shutdown timer or monitor.

I've had my Isspro for over 2 years and consider it to be one of the best investments I've made for the truck.

(I am not associated with Isspro or the Diesel Page in any way, just a satisfied customer.

Just a thought but, I have an engine oil pre-luber that you cycle on with the key until oil pressue builds and upon shut down there is a timer in the control module which will continue to cycle oil for a predetermined ammount of time that you set. I haven't had a chance to install it as yet because I have it hooked to another engine that I'm not using and cycle it occasionally to keep the rust away from the internals.
