Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Three-speed transfer case

New Venture Gear was just granted a patent for a three speed transfer case. It has your normal high range which is direct and a low range reduction. The third speed is an overdrive ratio.

That is one of those "why didn't that come out long ago?" deals like the Vari-lock diffs in the new Grand Cherokees.



If you think about, they have done gear reduction in most transfer case by using a planetary gear set. All they need to do is figure how to make the carrier the input member and you basically have overdrive. Mechanically making happen is a different story. This will cool to check out when it surfaces. Wonder if it'll be an OE or an aftermarket thing?
